Richard Torrez Jr. vs. Guido Vianello Fight Recap

The early rounds saw plenty of holding. There was so much of it, in fact, that the referee took a point away from Vianello in round two due to excessive holding. Torrez would come forward and the Italian would initiate a clinch to avoid taking damage. Despite the point deduction, the holding between the two continued into the later rounds.

As the fight entered its second half there was still plenty of holding, but both men were starting to land cleaner power punches. Between the two, it was Torrez who had better success in doing so. The Olympic silver medalist kept pressing forward and swinging shots at his opponent. Vianello was able to catch Torrez from time to time, but not enough to outwork the American.

In the eighth, Vianello was rocked by an overhand left and clearly on shaky legs. He was able to hold on, however, and even managed to land some power shots of his own before the round ended. In the ninth, Torrez was cut on his right eyelid from an accidental head clash. He did not let this deter him going into round 10 as continued to swing away at Vianello. In the end, Torrez’s output allowed him to win comfortably on the scorecards.

“Yeah [I was impressed by Vianello’s adjustments], he’s an Olympian. I never gave Guido any slack. I gave him all the credit. He’s a great fighter from Italy. Number one in his country. I have nothing but respect for him…”
