Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois Fight Recap

Following a packed Wembley Stadium belting out Sweet Caroline, it was time for the undisputed heavyweight main event between Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) and Daniel Dubois (22-3, 21 KOs). Michael Buffer soon hollered the immortal words, “Let’s Get Ready to Rumble!”

It was an impressive opening round from Usyk, as he moved his feet in and out and showed great accuracy. Dubois tried to get going, but Usyk’s movement was an ominous sign. The second round saw great ring generalship from the Ukrainian. He landed a heavy left hand near the end of the round that wobbled Dubois and backed him up.

Usyk started the fifth round moving in and out and countering well, before landing a left-right combination, knocking Dubois down, who looked in real trouble. The Brit beat the count, but the end was in sight, with Usyk slipping a punch from Dubois, before landing a big left hand counter, knocking Dubois down again, who was counted out. All rise to the mercurial undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk, who won by KO.

Lawrence Okolie vs Kevin Lerena

In the co-main event, Lawrence Okolie (22-1, 16 KOs) defended his WBC silver heavyweight title against Kevin Lerena (31-4, 15 KOs). It was a largely cagey opening couple of rounds, with Okolie working well off his jab and landing some nice body shots. Lerena started slow but did have some early success with the left hand.

Through the first half of the fight, Okolie boxed with discipline and mainly threw straight shots, which kept Lerena at bay. He continued to dictate the fight, landing straight shots almost at will. It wasn’t a hugely entertaining fight, but “The Sauce” was economical throughout. Lerena had more success as the fight progressed, but it was never enough to trouble the Brit. Lerena never really got going, but Okolie used his height advantage to impressive effect, earning a dominant unanimous decision win, with judges’ scores of 99-91 and 100-90 x2 ensuring “The Sauce” retains his WBC silver title.

Lewis Edmondson vs Daniel Lapin

Lewis Edmondson (11-1, 3 KOs) faced Daniel Lapin (12-0, 4 KOs) next in an intriguing light heavyweight clash, with Lapin’s IBF Intercontinental and the vacant WBO International light heavyweight titles on the line.

It was a cagey opening round, with Edmondson landing the better shots. Lapin enjoyed a better second round, showcasing his poise and accuracy. When Edmondson moved and pot-shotted, he looked comfortable. The British fighter enjoyed a productive third and fourth rounds, landing a smart left hook in round four. The sixth round was a better one for the Polish-born Ukrainian, who won the exchanges on the inside during the round.

It was a big eighth round for the Southampton fighter, who got inside and roughed his opponent up, landing some nice body shots. Lapin appeared to weather the storm and produce some impressive body work towards the end of the round. The Ukrainian dug deep in the ninth round, landing some nice combinations, in what was his best round of the fight. Lapin finished the stronger in the final round despite the best endeavours of Edmondson. Both fighters raised their arms at the end and gathered to hear the judges’ scorecards, which read 95-95 and 96-94 x2 in favour of the Ukrainian, who won by majority decision.

Vladyslav Sirenko vs Solomon Dacres

First up on the main card was Solomon Dacres (10-1, 3 KOs) vs Vladyslav Sirenko (22-1, 19 KOs) in the heavyweight division. The opening round saw both fighters have their moments. The second round saw Dacres move well and mix his shots impressively, landing some heavy shots. It was a strong third round for the Brit, who moved well and varied his shots, while Sirenko continued to walk forward, trying to close the distance.

By the halfway point, Dacres appeared in complete control, and despite fleeting moments of danger, the Brit picked his punches, showing impressive accuracy. The eighth round was the best up to that point for the Ukrainian, but Dacres looked untroubled apart from a big left hook, which the Brit absorbed well. The West Midlands fighter continued to box intelligently over the final two rounds. The judges’ scorecards read 99-91, 98-92 and 99-92, all in favour of Soloman “The Meal Deal” Dacres.

Aadam Hamed vs. Ezequiel Gregores

Next up was more super lightweight action, with Aadam Hamed (6-0, 3 KOs) vs Ezequiel Gregores (3-25, 0 KOs). Hamed started well, controlling the fight with his jab, with Gregores struggling to land anything of note.

Hamed continued to dominate the bout, picking his shots impressively, while moving to avoid any punches coming back. It was ultimately a dominant, unanimous decision victory for the 25-year-old Sheffield-born fighter. Unsurprisingly, referee Amy Pu scored the bout 40-36.

Lasha Guruli vs. James Francis

In the first fight on the card, it was a six-round super lightweight contest, with Lasha Guruli (2-0, 1 KO) facing James Francis (7-2, 1 KO). Guruli began well, controlling the distance in the early part of the fight, while Francis struggled to close the distance.
