Lenier Pero vs Jordan Thompson
Following the conclusion of an entertaining undercard, it was time for the Lenier Pero vs Jordan Thompson heavyweight main event.
A quiet opening round saw Thompson (15-2, 12 KOs) look to keep the fight long, with Pero (13-0, 8 KOs) eager to get inside. A strong second round from the Cuban saw him produce some effective body work, slowing Thompson’s movement down.
At the halfway point, Pero was comfortable in front, winning many of the exchanges thanks to his excellent body punching. Thompson had brief moments of success in round five, with single shots.
The Brit continued to have limited success, with Pero outworking his opponent. Thompson’s bodywork appeared to come to fruition in round eight, with the Cuban seemingly slowing down. Round nine saw Pero land a left hook, followed by a right hand, scrambling the senses of Thompson, who did well to survive the round.
An entertaining last round, where both fighters had success, but Pero landed the more telling shots near the bell. At Big Fight Weekend, we felt Pero landed the cleaner punches and won many of the exchanges. Thompson had more success as the fight went on, but it just felt like it wasn’t enough. The judges’ scorecards agreed, awarding Pero the unanimous decision win, with scorecards of 97-93, and 96-93 x2.
Omari Jones vs Yusuph Metu
Up next on the Lenier Pero vs Jordan Thompson undercard was Omari Jones (4-0, 4 KOs) vs Yusuph Metu (12-3, 9 KOs) in the super welterweight division.
It was an impressive opening round from Jones as he showcased slick footwork and excellent variation in his punches. Towards the end of the round, Jones landed a left hook, which floored Metu.
It was another dominant round for Jones in the second. Every time Metu threw a punch, Jones tagged him coming in. His timing and movement were most impressive in the early part of the fight.
A right hand over the top saw Metu take a knee, and in plenty of pain due to the damage to his left eye. The referee ultimately waved the fight off, awarding Jones the third-round TKO victory.
Pat Brown vs Felix Valera
It was the cruiserweights up next, with Pat Brown (5-0, 5 KOs) facing Felix Valera (24-9, 21 KOs)
A relatively quiet opening round, with both men looking to find their range. Brown ran out at the beginning of the second round and hurt Valera immediately. A left hook, followed by a straight right, started the trouble for Valera. Brown then smelled blood and landed some eye-catching shots as Valera tried to fire back. Brown’s accuracy brought the first knockdown.
Another knockdown soon arrived, and a brutal left hook brought the end of the fight, with the third knockdown leading the referee to wave the fight off, awarding Brown the second-round KO victory. A brilliant U.S. debut from “The Bomber.”
Yoelvis Gomez vs Antraveous Ingram
Next up in the super welterweight division was Yoelvis Gomez (9-1-1, 7 KOs) vs Antraveous Ingram (12-0-1, 6 KOs).
It was a bright opening round from Gomez, who consistently landed power shots throughout the opening three minutes. Ingram struggled to land anything of note in the early rounds, with Gomez winning all the exchanges.
Ingram had his best moment in the third round, where he seemingly hurt his Cuban opponent, who chose to hold the American. Over the next two rounds, the Cuban landed the better shots, but Ingram had his moments. Some big left hands from Gomez had Ingram hanging on, desperate to hear the bell for the end of round five.
The American showed his elite engine as he continued to apply pressure in round seven. He won the majority of the exchanges up close, enjoying his best moments of the bout. It was bombs away in the eighth round, with Ingram on top at the beginning and Gomez enjoying success in the latter part of the round.
In the tenth and final round, Gomez won the exchanges and ended the fight on top. However, despite Big Fight Weekend having Gomez up by two rounds, the judges scored it 96-94 for Gomez, 96-94 for Ingram, and 95-95, declaring the bout a split decision draw.
Nishant Dev vs Juan Carlos Medina
Kicking off the Lenier Pero vs Jordan Thompson undercard was Matchroom Boxing prospect Nishant Dev (4-0, 2KOs) vs Juan Carlos Medina (4-3, 3 KOs) in the super welterweight division.
A largely scrappy opening round saw Dev land a well-timed overhand left near the end of the round. Dev took the round thanks to his work in the last 30 seconds. A strong start to the second round saw Dev catch his opponent coming in.
The Indian fighter enjoyed a strong fourth round, mixing his attacks impressively and landing some eye-catching combinations. Medina showed his bravery, but he only had limited success of his own as Dev’s confidence increased as the fight continued. Dev’s domination continued until the final bell, with all three judges scoring it 60-54 in favour of Dev.
