Lauren Price Repeatedly Drops Bexcy Mateus to Retain WBA World Title

Lauren Price (8-0, 2 KOs) dominated against Bexcy Mateus (7-1, 6 KOs), winning via third-round technical knockout to remain a welterweight champion.

The official time of stoppage was 1:42. With the victory, Price remains the WBA welterweight world champion. She won the title with a technical decision win over Jessica McCaskill in May this year. This was Price’s first defence of the belt.

The fight took place on the undercard of the Natasha Jonas vs. Ivana Habazin clash at the Exhibition Centre in Liverpool, England. Boxing fans in the United Kingdom and Ireland could catch the action live on Sky Sports. Those in the United States could do so with Peacock. As for the rest of the world, BOXXER put up this post to show how you could catch the action.

Be sure to return to Big Fight Weekend for the final recap of Jonas vs. Habazin!

Fight Recap

Price took a patient approach to this fight and was not in aggressive pursuit of the stoppage. Late in round one, Mateus went to the canvas from a one-two. Although she got up, it was a sign that things wouldn’t go her way in this world title clash.

In round two, a straight left sent Mateus down once more. The Colombian was proving to have very little for Price and the reigning champion was having her way. In the third, a straight left stunned Mateus and sent her back to the ropes with her hands down. It was at that point that Price landed another straight left that sent Mateus down and caused referee Steve Gray to put an end to proceedings.

Post-fight Interview

Lauren Price

“Well, with speed comes power, right?” said Price after the fight. “But yeah, I enjoyed myself in there tonight. Wanted to make a bit of a statement. Obviously, I want big fights next year and credit to my opponent. I didn’t really know much about her coming in. I knew she had a good record, but I’ve had a great camp and yeah. Over the moon.”

“I think it’s just, you know, fight by fight. I keep learning, keep development [sic]. I’ve still got so much more to come, but I’ve got a great team behind me. You’ve seen tonight now I’m not just speed, I can bang as well. So, happy days.”

Undercard Results

Mark Jeffers (19-0, 6 KOs) won via third-round technical knockout against Joshua Quartey (10-1, 9 KOs). The time of stoppage for this 10-round super middleweight bout was 2:42. Quartey first went down from a barrage of punches to the head in round three. A left hook to the body sent him to the canvas for a second time. Following a barrage of unanswered punches, referee Kieran McCann ended proceedings.

Opening the broadcast on Sky Sports, Viddal Riley (12-0, 7 KOs) won via second-round technical knockout against Dan Garber (7-4, 2 KOs). The time of stoppage for this six-round cruiserweight contest was 2:35. After he was being hit repeatedly with very little response, referee John Latham put an end to proceedings with Garber still standing. During his post-fight interview, it was confirmed that Riley would face Isaac Chamberlain on February 1.
