Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua fight recap

Anthony Joshua (29-4, 26 KOs) took things into round six, but he eventually got the knockout win against Jake Paul (12-2, 7 KOs).

The official time of stoppage for their eight-round heavyweight contest was 1:31. Despite Joshua scoring four knockdowns over the course of the bout, the fight itself was a tough watch as Paul spent most of it on the backfoot and well out of range. Despite the American’s best efforts to avoid getting hit with power shots, he ultimately reached a point where he could no longer continue.

Paul spent almost the entirety of the opening round on the back foot and as far away as possible from Joshua. Almost no punches were landed due to the distance between the two. Paul continued with his approach into the second. Joshua pressed forward but was not closing the distance between them.

The already farcical matchup became even more so in round four with Paul repeatedly trying to land what looked like takedowns. He repeatedly fell to the canvas doing so. This appeared to frustrate Joshua somewhat, but he continued pressing forward as he had been so far.

A knockdown was called in the fifth after Paul went down from a right hook to the head. He went down once again later in the round from another right hook followed by a left hand upstairs. Although the fight was not yet over, it would soon come to its conclusion.

Round six saw Joshua land a right cross to the head that sent his opponent down a third time. Although Paul got up, he was soon dropped again by a straight right hand that landed on the face. The American was unable to beat the count, putting an immediate end to proceedings.

Undercard on Netflix

Alycia Baumgardner (17-1, 7 KOs, 1 NC) won a unanimous decision against Leila Beaudoin (13-2, 2 KOs). Scores were 118-109 and 117-110 (x2). Baumgardner remains the WBA, WBO, and IBF super featherweight world champion with the victory. It was a dominant performance for the reigning champion who dropped Beaudoin in the seventh with a counter right to the head. The challenger struggled to get the upper hand in this fight and wound up losing wide on the scorecards.

Anderson Silva (4-2, 3 KOs) won via second round technical knockout against Tyron Woodley (0-3, 0 KOs). The official time of stoppage for their six-round cruiserweight bout was 1:33. Woodley was knocked down by a right uppercut followed by a right hook to the head. Although he got up, referee Samuel Burgos deemed him to be in no position to continue and put an end to proceedings.

Opening the broadcast on Netflix, Jahmal Harvey (2-0, 1 KO) won a unanimous decision against Kevin Cervantes (5-1, 5 KOs). Scores for their six-round super featherweight clash were 60-53 across the board. Cervantes was knocked down by hooks to the head in the first.

Undercard on YouTube

On a portion of the undercard that was broadcast on YouTube, Cherneka Johnson (19-2, 8 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Amanda Galle (12-1-1, 1 KO). Scores were 99-91, 98-92, and 97-93. Johnson remains the undisputed bantamweight world champion with the result. She attained that status against Shurretta Metcalf earlier this year. This was Johnson’s first defence. A bloody affair that saw both women cut above their left eyes, the reigning champion outworked Galle over 10 rounds to retain her titles.

Caroline Dubois (12-0-1, 5 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Camilla Panatta (8-3-1, 1 KO). Scores were 99-90 across the board. Dubois retains her WBC lightweight world title with the victory. This was her third defence since being promoted to full titlist following Katie Taylor’s decision to vacate. Dubois put in a dominant performance against Panatta, scoring a knockdown from a right hook upstairs in round six.

Yokasta Valle (34-3, 10 KOs) won a majority decision against Yadira Bustillos (11-2, 2 KOs). Although one judge had the action 95-95, the other two saw it 98-92 and 97-93. Both women swung wildly at each other from start to finish. Repeated head clashes did not deter either fighter. In the end, Valle showed a bit more quality than her opponent. The Costa Rican remains the WBC minimumweight world champion with the win. This was her first defence of the title since winning it against Elizabeth Corzo last year.

Avious Griffin (18-1, 17 KOs) won via first round knockout against Justin Cardona (10-2, 5 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this eight-round welterweight contest was 2:59. Cardona was dropped by a right followed by a left hook to the head. He remained down for the entire count.

Opening the broadcast on YouTube, Keno Marley (1-0, 0 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Diarra Davis Jr. (2-2, 1 KO). Scores for their four-round cruiserweight bout were 40-35 across the board. David was knocked down in the first from a right hand upstairs.
