Jai Opetaia vs. Brandon Glanton fight recap
Jai Opetaia (30-0, 23 KOs) had a dominant showing in a unanimous decision win against Brandon Glanton (21-4, 18 KOs).
Scores were 119-106 across the board. Opetaia was the reigning IBF cruiserweight world champion going into fight week. However, the sanctioning body ultimately refused to sanction his bout against Glanton. The Ring magazine and the inaugural Zuffa cruiserweight world titles were on the line, for what it’s worth. Opetaia can now claim to possess both.
The opening round saw Opetaia move around the ring and stay at range of Glanton, throwing the occasional punch. This continued into the second with neither connecting much. Glanton remained in pursuit of his opponent, an approach that eventually made him susceptible to hard power shots.
Rounds four and five saw Opetaia elect to fight on the inside with his opponent, which saw him have success. He tried switching back to boxing at range in the sixth, but Glanton made that difficult with his come forward approach. That round also saw the American lose a point for excessive holding. It was a harsh decision from the referee as both men were mostly infighting, not holding. Round eight saw Glanton lose another point for low blows.

As the rounds went on, it was clear that Opetaia was outworking his opponent. Glanton continued to press forward, but just could not match the punch output of the Australian. Opetaia kept piling on the punishment as the fight entered its final third. Bizarrely, he was deducted a point in round 11 for excessive holding. In reality, it was just another case of both men being on the inside.

The point deduction mattered little in the end. Opetaia was throwing all kinds of punishing shots by the fight’s end. Glanton was rocked in round 12 from a straight left, but stayed on his feet till the final bell. Despite his best efforts, there was little he could do against the accurate and high volume punching of Opetaia.
