Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach fight recap

Lamont Roach (25-1-3, 10 KOs) appeared to have done enough to defeat Isaac Cruz (28-3-2, 18 KOs), but instead had to settle for a majority draw.

Although one judge had the action 115-111 for Cruz, the other two saw it a 113-113 draw. This is the second consecutive draw for Roach who drew earlier this year against Gervonta Davis. The result also ends a two fight win streak for Cruz.

Cruz immediately started pressing forward when the fight began. He was soon connecting with his swinging punches. Roach caught his opponent with a counter left hook to the head towards the end of round one that sent the Mexican off balance. Cruz quickly recovered and continued fighting in the manner he normally fights in.

Both men were not afraid to exchange hard hooks at close range with each other. With under a minute to go in round three, Roach was ruled knocked down after being hit with a left hook upstairs that caused him to fall back and touch the canvas with his glove. Despite this, it did not deter the American from trading at close range.

Cruz was deducted a point in round seven for holding. Roach started to pull away thanks to accurate puncing and his opponent’s inability to cut off the ring when coming forward. The success Cruz enjoyed earlier became less frequent in the second half of the contest. Aside from a flurry towards the end of round 11, the Mexican’s offence had been neutralized. Despite Roach appearing to have done enough to win, none of the judges saw him doing so.

Erislandy Lara vs. Johan Gonzalez fight recap

Erislandy Lara (32-3-3, 19 KOs) may have scored two knockdowns against Johan Gonzalez (36-5, 34 KOs), but he wound winning via unanimous decision in a lacklustre affair.

Scores for their bout were 120-106, 119-107, and 118-108. Lara retains his WBA middleweight world title with the result. This was his third defence of it since being promoted to primary titlist. Lara was supposed to fight Janibek Alimkhanuly in a unification, but the fight was scrapped when the Kazakh tested positive for a banned substance.

Lara scored a knockdown with less than a minute to go in the opening round with a straight left hand upstairs. Both men opted to throw punches from range. Although Gonzalez pressed forward in an attempt to close the distance, Lara made sure there was space between the two by moving off of the back foot.

Despite the knockdown in the first, there was not much action as the fight entered the middle rounds. Gonzalez was wobbled by successive straight left hands to the head in the fifth, but recovered quickly. Neither man threw much, making for a lacklustre first half of their encounter.

The lack of action continued until the final 30 seconds of round 12. Lara landed a straight left hand to the head that rocked his opponent. He followed it up with two short left hands upstairs that sent Gonzalez down. The Venezuelan got up, but it was too late to turn things around. Lara won rounds by simply being more accurate. However, neither him nor Gonzalez did much of note aside from the two knockdowns.

Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach undercard on Prime Video PPV

O’Shaquie Foster (24-3, 12 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Stephen Fulton (23-2, 8 KOs). Scores for their 12-round lightweight fight were 119-109, 118-110, and 117-111. Foster was originally scheduled to defend his WBC super featherweight world title. Due to Fulton missing weight, however, this was changed into a lightweight bout with Foster’s title not at stake.

Opening the PPV, Jesus Ramos Jr. (24-1, 19 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Shane Mosley Jr. (22-5, 12 KOs). Scores for their 12-round middleweight contest were 117-111 (x2) and 116-112.

Isaac Lucero (18-0, 14 KOs) won via eight round technical knockout against Roberto Valenzuela Jr. (31-6, 29 KOs). The official time of stoppage for their 10-round super welterweight fight was 2:59.
