George Kambosos Jr. Overcomes Late Jake Wyllie Rally, Returns to Winning Ways

George Kambosos Jr. (22-3, 10 KOs) had to overcome a late rally from Jake Wyllie (16-2, 15 KOs, 1 NC), but ultimately prevailed via unanimous decision.

Scores were 117-111 (x2) and 115-113. With the win, Kambosos returns to winning ways. His last fight, which took place in May last year, saw him lose to Vasyl Lomachenko via technical knockout in a bout for the IBF lightweight title. Against Wyllie, Kambosos gets his first win since moving back to super lightweight.

Their bout headlined a co-promotion between Matchroom Boxing and DiBella Entertainment – done in association with Tasman Fighters – at the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Australia. Boxing fans around the world could catch the action live on DAZN. Originally, Kambosos was set to Daud Yordan. However, the Indonesian was hospitalized just days before fight night. As a result, Wyllie stepped in to keep the event on.

George Kambosos Jr. vs. Jake Wyllie Fight Recap

The first round saw both fighters initially stay at range and throw punches from there. Towards the end of the first, however, Kambosos started to find a home for his left hand. The former unified lightweight champion was showing that he was the more accurate puncher of the two in the early rounds. Kambosos was also clearly the quicker of the two, something that allowed him to land more than his opponent.

Despite getting hit cleanly with hard shots early on, Wyllie did what he could to stay in the fight. In round nine, Kambosos was cut above the left eye from a clash of heads. Wyllie grew in confidence from this and started to connect more often with him power punches. In the final round, he did what he could to get a knockdown, but Kambosos was able to stay standing. Although Wyllie ended the fight strong, it was not enough to overcome the lead that his opponent had built.

Tiara Brown Stuns Skye Nicolson

Tiara Brown (19-0, 11 KOs) stunned Skye Nicolson (12-1, 1 KO) via split decision to become a featherweight world champion.

While one judge had it 96-94 for Nicolson, the other two saw it 97-93 and 96-94 for Brown. With the victory, Brown is now the WBC featherweight champion. She ends the title reign of Nicolson, who had won the belt in April last year against Sarah Mahfoud.

In the opening round, Nicolson moved off of the back foot, throwing and landing punches from range. Brown pressed forward, attempting to cut off the ring but struggling to do so against a mobile opponent in early rounds. As the fight progressed, the American increased her punch output and started to have more success closing the distance. However, there was also plenty of clinching when the distance was closed.

In the second half of the bout, Nicolson did best when she kept things at range. On the other hand, Brown had success of her own when she was fighting on the inside. Over 10 rounds, it was a competitive affair. In the end, Brown’s pressure allowed her to get the win on two of the scorecards.

Cherneka Johnson Overwhelms Nina Hughes in WBA World Title Defence

Cherneka Johnson (17-2, 7 KOs) overwhelmed Nina Hughes (6-2, 2 KOs) to win their rematch via technical knockout.

The official time of stoppage was 0:46 of round seven. With the victory, Johnson retains her WBA bantamweight world title. She won the belt controversially in her first meeting with Hughes in May last year. This was Johnson’s first defence of her world title.

Both women went at each other the moment the fight began. However, there was also a lot of holding as the two fighters were charging at each other. Repeated head clashes saw a cut form on the nose of Hughes. The pace of the fight appeared to favour Johnson, who looked the fresher of the two as the world title contest reached its halfway point.

In round five, Hughes was deducted a point for repeated holding. As the fight went on, Johnson only continued to dominate. Although the holding persisted, the reigning champion was the one having more success in landing her punches. In the seventh, Hughes’ corner had had enough and threw in the towel, putting an end to proceedings.

Televised Undercard Bouts

Teremoana Teremoana (7-0, 7 KOs) won via first round technical knockout against James Singh (12-6, 11 KOs, 2 NC). The official time of stoppage for this six-round heavyweight contest was 2:12. Singh first went down from a left hand. Not long after, a barrage from Teremoana caused referee Ignatius Missailidis to step in and end proceedings with Singh still standing.

Imam Khataev (10-0, 9 KOs) won a unanimous decision against Durval Palacio (14-4, 11 KOs). Scores for the 10-round light heavyweight fight were 99-89 (x2) and 98-90. Palacio was knocked down in round four from a left hook followed by a right hand. In the fifth, Khataev was deducted a point for a low blow.

Untelevised Undercard Bouts

In a portion of the undercard that was not televised, Hemi Ahio (24-1, 18 KOs) won via first round technical knockout against Aekkaphob Auraiwan (9-4-1, 7 KOs). The official time of stoppage for this eight-round heavyweight bout was 2:59.
