Eduardo Núñez vs. Christopher Diaz Fight Recap

Eduardo Núñez (29-1, 27 KOs) got the unanimous decision victory following an entertaining scrap against Christopher Diaz (30-6, 19 KOs).

Scores for their bout were 117-109 (x2) and 116-110. With the win, Núñez remains the IBF super featherweight world champion. He won the title in May this year against Masanori Rikiishi. This was Núñez’s first defence.

Both men showed a willingness to trade at close quarters for the duration of the contest. Diaz definitely kept things competitive with his hooks. Núñez was just slightly better, however, coming forward and swinging back with hooks of his own.

In round seven, a knockdown was called after a right hook upstairs caused Diaz’s gloves to briefly touch the canvas. Not long after, the Puerto Rican was dropped by a straight right hand to the head. Despite two knockdowns being called, Diaz was able to stay on his feet and carry on fighting.

Clearly not deterred by the knockdowns, the challenger continued swinging hooks. Núñez responded in turn with the crowd clearly enjoying what was unfolding in front of them. By the end of round 11, the reigning champion was sporting a small cut by his left eye.

Diaz did whatever he could to at least score a knockdown in the twelfth. In addition to landing hard hooks to the body and head, he was also able to further bloody the eye of Núñez. The Mexican did get hit with a massive uppercut, but remained standing till the final bell. In the end, Núñez had done enough to win on the scorecards and retain his world title.

Yoali Mosqueda (14-0, 11 KOs) won via sixth round technical knockout against German Valenzuela (17-8, 12 KOs, 1 NC). The official time of stoppage for this 10-round flyweight contest was 1:42. Valenzuela’s corner put an end to the fight after he got hit with a left hook that sent his mouthpiece flying. He had been getting hit clean throughout the bout and Valenzuela’s corner had told him going into round six that they would stop it if he did not show something.

Hector Beltran Jr. (4-0, 4 KOs) won via first round technical knockout against Moises Martinez (2-1, 1 KO). The official time of stoppage for this four-round super welterweight fight was 2:03. Martinez was first dropped by a right hook to the body followed by a right uppercut. He went down for a second time after being hit with a one-two upstairs. It was at that point that the referee put an end to proceedings.
