David Benavidez vs. Anthony Yarde fight recap

David Benavidez (31-0, 25 KOs) finally got a stoppage win at light heavyweight, doing so via seventh round technical knockout against Anthony Yarde (27-4, 24 KOs).

The official time of stoppage was 1:59. Benavidez retains his WBC world title with the victory. This was his first defence of it after Dmitry Bivol had vacated the belt.

Yarde began the fight on the back foot, content with letting Benavidez pursue him around the ring. From the second round onwards he switched between being on the front and back foot. Yarde had success in establishing his jab, using it to keep the reigning champion at bay. Eventually, Benavidez started to close the distance and land punishing shots to the head.

Yarde’s style allowed him to have success with counters. Towards the end of round four, however, Benavidez was able to unleash a barrage of hooks to the head while one of his hands was being held by Yarde. The sixth saw both men trade flurries with each other, with Benavidez getting the better of the exchanges. The end was near for the Brit.

Benavidez unloaded on the challenger early in round seven. He scored the knockdown with a barrage of punches with over two minutes to go in the seventh. However, Benavidez was deducted two points for hitting Yarde while he was down. It made little difference. Benavidez unleashed another barrage that caused the referee to step in with Yarde still standing.

Brian Norman Jr. vs. Devin Haney fight recap

Devin Haney (33-0, 15 KOs, 1 NC) scored an early knockdown before going on to win a unanimous decision against Brian Norman Jr. (28-1, 22 KOs, 2 NCs), who simply could not get his offence going.

Scores were 117-110, 116-111, and 114-113. Haney is now the WBO welterweight world champion with the victory. He was previously an undisputed champion at lightweight and a WBC titlist at super lightweight.

Both men spent much of the first round posturing in front of each other. Attempts at closing the distance were meet with clinches. Most of round two was also spent that way until Haney stunned those in attendance. A left hook upstairs rocked Norman. Haney followed it up with a left and right hook to the head that sent the reigning champion down. Norman was able to make it out of the second on his feet, however.

Haney largely prevented his opponent from making use of his offensive abilities. Whenever Norman tried to get close, he was met with a clinch. He was also unable to do much from range. Haney’s jab also proved to be effective and he racked up the rounds thanks to Norman’s lack of offence.

One of the things Norman did consistently that did not work was to lunge in in an attempt to close the distance. Haney was prepared each time for this, clinching to prevent getting hit with any shots. The former undisputed lightweight champion was able to seal the win on the scorecards by simply being able to implement his offence.

Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez vs. Fernando Martínez fight recap

Jesse “Bam” Rodríguez (23-0, 16 KOs) gradually broke down Fernando Martínez (18-1, 9 KOs) to eventually score a brutal knockout.

The official time of stoppage was 1:25 of round 10. Rodríguez is now the WBO, WBA, and WBC super flyweight world champion with the victory. He held the WBC and WBO titles going into the bout. “Bam” now adds the WBA to his collection.

Martínez swung wildly from the get-go. Rodríguez did not let that bother him, however, and simply moved out of the way to avoid getting hit. “Bam” immediately began breaking down his opponent, consistently throwing out the job and investing to the body. Martínez continued to throw with everything he got, but those punches were not having the desired effect.

The Argentinian simply could not find a way to get the upper hand. Rodríguez’s footwork and punch variety was a cut above. However, “Puma” showed resilience and stayed on his feet. Signs of a stoppage appeared in round nine when Martínez was rocked by a combination and resorted to holding to avoid going down.

The end finally came. A counter left hook from “Bam” sent Martínez right to the canvas. Although the referee counted to 10, it was clear that the Argentinian was not getting up. Martínez stayed down for the entire count, giving Rodríguez the knockout win.

Abdullah Mason vs. Sam Noakes fight recap

Abdullah Mason (20-0, 17 KOs) had to give it his all in order to get the unanimous decision win against Sam Noakes (17-1, 15 KOs).

Scores were 117-111 and 115-113 (x2). Mason is now the WBO lightweight world champion with the victory. This was his first time challenging for a world title.

A back-and-forth opening round saw both men unafraid of getting close to land their shots. This continued into subsequent rounds. Mason was able to rock his opponent early in the third with a combination upstairs. Noakes held on, but he also had to deal with a cut that appeared by his left eye. Despite this, the Brit chose to slug with Mason in round four.

Although clinching became more frequent as the fight progressed, the pair continued to exchange at close quarters. Mason sought to move around the ring, but kept getting dragged into trading on the inside with Noakes. Neither man let the other have success for too long without some kind of response. Both fighters consistently exchanged brutal shots to the body and were somehow still standing until the final bell.

Mason had his opponent rocked towards the end of the tenth thanks to a barrage of punches. However, not only was Noakes able to weather the turbulence and make it out of the round, he also had a successful eleventh. Mason began the twelfth strongly, rocking the Brit once again. But as had been the case all fight long, Noakes battled back with hellacious punches of his own.
