Title fights from around the world: Cecilia Brækhus brings an end to a legendary career

Today, boxing world title fights take place around the globe and are more accessible to watch than ever before. Sometimes, championship bouts do not receive as much attention and go underreported. Big Fight Weekend commits to writing about boxing news, previews and recaps. As such, the site now has a recurring segment on championship bouts from around the world from the past week.

The focus of these pieces will be on clashes ranging from atomweight to heavyweight that had the WBA, WBC, IBF, and/or WBO titles on the line. This week’s edition of “Title Fights From Around the World” consists of just one recap. In Norway, a boxer brought an end to her legendary career by becoming a unified world champion.

Ema Kozin vs. Cecilia Brækhus fight recap

Cecilia Brækhus (39-2-1, 9 KOs) brought an end to her career with a unanimous decision win against Ema Kozin (24-2-1, 12 KOs).

Scores for their bout were 98-92, 97-93, and 96-94. Brækhus became the WBO and WBC super welterweight world champion with the victory. She had previously been a world champion at welterweight, a reign that saw her win 26 consecutive title fights and eventually become undisputed at the weight class.

Kozin-Brækhus headlined an October 4 First Lady Promotions card at the NOVA Spektrum in Lillestrøm, Norway. Fight fans could catch the action live on UFC Fight Pass on a tape-delay stream (the fight took place on a Saturday but was not broadcast till Sunday).

A quick start for Kozin allowed her to take the first round. However, Brækhus was soon able to settle in and land combinations of her own. Following four rounds of action, the ring announcer announced that all three judges had the Norwegian up by two rounds (note: some countries utilize the WBC’s open scoring system where scores are typically read after the fourth and eighth rounds).

Brækhus continued to dominate proceedings until the final bell. Kozin pressed forward throughout the contest but was unable to figure out her opponent. The unanimous decision victory was a fitting end for Brækhus, who became a unified world champion in the final fight of her career.
