Bektemir Melikuziev vs. Darius Fulghum Fight Recap

Bektemir Melikuziev (16-1, 10 KOs) is now one step closer to challenging for a world title following his unanimous decision win over Darius Fulghum (14-1, 12 KOs).

Scores were 114-112 across the board for Melikuziev. With the victory, he is now the mandatory challenger for the WBA super middleweight championship. The title is currently held by undisputed champion Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez.

After two rounds where both fighters were only able to land one punch at a time, Fulghum was visibly rocked early in round three from an overhand left. Melikuziev unleashed several punches following this while also keeping his opponent against the ropes. Fulghum was able to recover, however, and carried on fighting.

In the fifth round, blood poured from the nose of Melikuziev after he got hit with uppercuts. Fulghum attempted to capitalize, but it was the Uzbek who wound up ending the round strongly with straights of his own. Melikuziev would have to deal with a bloody nose till the final bell.

Melikuziev appeared to tire significantly as the fight went on. Following several warnings throughout the contest, he was deducted a point in round seven for holding. Despite this, he continued throwing wild shots at his opponent. Fulghum would respond in turn and had his moments of success as both fighters went toe-to-toe as the fight neared its end.

In round 12, a left hook to the body followed by another left upstairs sent Fulghum to the canvas. He got up and continued to exchange with Melikuziev till the end of the fight. In the end, the knockdown helped the Uzbek seal the decision win to become a mandatory challenger for a world title at super middleweight.
