Sara Bailey vs. Evelin Bermudez is a world title unification going under the radar
Sara Bailey (6-0, 0 KOs) and Evelin Bermudez (21-1-1, 7 KOs) will soon fight in a light flyweight world title unification bout.
Their clash headlines a United Boxing Promotions (UBP) card at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ottawa, Canada. Fight fans in the country can catch the action live on TSN+. Those in Argentina will be able to do so with TyC Sports.
Bermudez’s IBF and WBO world titles will be on the line for their September 20 fight. On the other hand, Bailey’s WBA belt will also be at stake.
Read on for Big Fight Weekend’s preview of this unification contest.
Sara Bailey vs. Evelin Bermudez is a world title unification going under the radar
Bermudez first became a world champion in 2018, winning the IBF light flyweight world title against María Bautista. She then went 3-0-1 in title fights before adding the WBO strap with a victory over Debora Rengifo in 2022. Later that year, the Argentinian lost the titles via majority decision against Yokasta Valle. She regained them just a few months later with a unanimous decision win over Tania Enriquez, however, after Valle vacated the titles soon after winning them. Since then, Bermudez has made defences against Kim Clavel, Jessica Salazar, and Tenkai Tsunami.
Bailey has less experience than Bermudez in the professional ranks, but spent many years in the amateur system. She turned professional in late 2022 but was still competing in amateur tournaments until December 2023. Bailey won a secondary version of the WBA light flyweight world title against Bautista in April last year. The organization promoted her to primary titlist a few months later after Yesica Nery Plata vacated the title. Since then, Canada’s Bailey has made defences against Anabel Ortiz and Cristina Navarro.
Sara Bailey vs. Evelin Bermudez is an excellent matchup
Not only is this a fight for three of the major world titles, it features two of the best boxers in the light flyweight division. This is a high quality matchup where the winner becomes one step closer to becoming undisputed. Lourdes Juárez will be defending the WBC title next month against Nery Plata, potentially setting up an undisputed clash early in 2026.
Neither Bailey nor Bermudez are big punchers, so expect their bout to go the distance. That does not mean the fight will lack entertainment. Bermudez is a forward-moving slugger who will throw punches at a high volume. Bailey is more of a technician who will look for the right opportunities to land her shots. At the end of day, however, this is a meaningful fight for the Canadian province of Ontario. Few world title unifications are held there, let alone world title fights in this day and age. Whatever the result of Bailey-Bermudez may be, local fight fans will definitely be appreciative of it.
