Heavyweight Boxing: Rising Stars to Watch in Spring 2025
Moses Itauma
Moses Itauma (11-0, 9 KOs) is fast making a name for himself in the heavyweight division, winning four times in 2024, including his demolition of Mariusz Wach and Demsey McKean. Queensberry have spoken about a big fight being next for Ituama with the announcement expected soon. He moves like a middleweight and punches like a heavyweight. His hand speed and timing are exceptional and the 20-year-old looks set for a massive 2025.
The exciting heavyweight contender has received widespread praise, with ex-world champion David Haye saying: “To be in a position physically, where you are at 19, skills, not taking any unnecessary shots. The punch power is there. That’s what you wanna see in a future champ.”
George Groves has also praised the big-punching Queensberry fighter: “I think Moses Itauma is a harder fight than Daniel Dubois for Usyk.”
Richard Torrez Jr.
Richard Torrez Jr. (12-0, 11 KOs) He had a successful amateur career, winning a silver medal at the 2020 Olympics. Torrez has enjoyed an impressive start to his professional career, staying active and beating all his opponents with relative ease. He mixes his attacks well and has proven he carries plenty of power.
The Tulare native will take a big step up in class when he takes on the dangerous Guido Vianello (13-2-1, 11 KOs). This upcoming bout on April 5 has the 25-year-old southpaw eager to prove himself: “This is something I’ve been working toward for a long time,” Torrez said. “I want to prove that I’m the best heavyweight out there and show what American heavyweights are made of. When they offered me Guido, I didn’t hesitate. I’m ready to go.”
Top Rank chairman Bob Arum also expressed his excitement over this intriguing matchup: “This has all the makings of a heavyweight classic, two athletic big men with power and tremendous determination,” said Top Rank Chairman Bob Arum. “Top Rank has promoted Richard and Guido from the start of their respective professional careers, and I look forward to seeing how the fight unfolds at the Palms Casino Resort.”
Justis Huni
Justis Huni (12-0, 7 KOs) is an undefeated heavyweight – who has enjoyed an impressive start to his professional heavyweight boxing career. He came through a difficult fight against Kevin Lerena, where he was rocked on more than one occasion.
Since the Lerena fight, Huni has won all three fights by stoppage, including most recently against Shaun Potgieter. Huni vs Moses Itauma has been rumoured – and his manager Mark Francis has spoken on the possibility of this happening:“We’ve got a couple of opponents earmarked but the big thing is that Itauma fight, we want it, he’s a guy on our radar. He’s a great young fighter but hasn’t got the same skills and ability as Justis.”
Eddie Hearn spoke about his excitement regarding Huni back in 2023, when signing the Australian: “I’m delighted to welcome Justis Huni to the Matchroom Boxing team. Justis has already become one of the biggest names in Australian boxing and is ranked in the top 15 but now we look forward to boxing him around the world and leading him to a shot at the world heavyweight title.
“The signing also continues to strengthen our Australian roster with more additions expected in the coming months, we look forward to our return to this important market in the first half of 2023.”
Dainier Pero
Dainier “The Fear” Pero (10-0, 8 KOs) has adapted brilliantly to professional heavyweight boxing, which saw him win all five fights in 2025 by KO. He is fast making a name for himself in the heavyweight division and renowned trainer Bob Santos has recently lavished praise on the Cuban: “His power, athleticism, and high ring IQ make him stand out from everyone else in the division.
“He moves with the precision and agility of a young Usyk, showcasing exceptional footwork, impressive ring generalship, and true explosive power. Being named 2024 Prospect of the Year would be a well-deserved recognition of the hard work and dedication he’s put into his craft.”
Fabio Wardley
Fabio Wardley (18-0-1, 187 KOs) looks set for a busy 2025. Last year saw the 30-year-old Ipswich native battle to a split draw against Frazer Clarke before eviscerating Clarke in the first round of their rematch.
He is now fighting under the Queensberry banner and will seemingly have a big fight in 2025 as confirmed by Frank Warren who told DAZN: “It is going to be extra special. Fabio is the man and deserves this next big fight.
“We [Queensbury] are the home of heavyweight boxing. The champion who has the three belts [Oleksandr Usyk] – if he wants to defend them, then he’s got to defend them against our guys. So we’ve got everything here and it all on DAZN too. It is very exciting times for us and our fighters.”
