Devin Haney Called ‘A Shot Fighter’ by Leading Promoter

On May 2 in Times Square, The Ring will host a historic fight card titled: ‘Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves.’ The card will feature Ryan Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) vs Rolly Romero (16-2, 13 KOs), Devin Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) vs Jose Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) and Teofimo Lopez (21-1, 13 KOs) vs Arnold Barboza Jr. (32-0, 11 KOs).

This fascinating event will be the first-ever U.S. event for The Ring Magazine. The event will be presented by SNK Corporation in association with Oscar De La Hoya for Golden Boy Promotions and Eddie Hearn for Matchroom Boxing. As we build up to fight night, Oscar De La Hoya spoke to BoxingScene about Haney vs Ramirez and controversially labelled “The Dream” a “shot fighter.”

Oscar De La Hoya Discusses Devin Haney vs Ryan Garcia

The countdown has begun, and in less than one month, the historic Times Square tripleheader card will take place. Haney vs Garcia was eventually declared a no-contest, with “Kingry” failing a VADA pre-fight and post-fight drug test, with Ostarine found in his urine.

Dan Rafael previously revealed via his Fight Freaks Unite Substack that a two-fight deal is in place, and should both win on May 2, Haney and Garcia will meet in a rematch. This planned rematch adds a further layer of intrigue ahead of the Times Square card.

There is no love lost between the two and Garcia’s promoter Oscar De La Hoya believes Garcia-Haney has left “The Dream” a shot fighter ahead of his comeback fight against Jose Ramirez:

“I feel Devin Haney is a shot fighter after what Ryan Garcia did to him,” said De La Hoya.

De La Hoya continued: “It happens (becoming a shot fighter) that quick, yes,”

“I’ve seen [Haney’s] demeanor … he looks lost. Look, Ramirez still has his power, his legs and a left hook,” added the Golden Boy promoter.

Haney vs Ramirez

Looking ahead to Haney-Ramirez, De La Hoya appeared confident the 32-year-old will cause a huge shock: “Ramirez is coming in guns blazing,” De La Hoya said.

He added: “He senses the opportunity.”
