Derek Chisora (36-13, 23 KOs) will soon take on Deontay Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs) in a 12-round heavyweight clash.
Their bout headlines a MF Pro and Queensberry Promotions card at the O2 Arena in London, England. Fight fans around the world can catch the action live as a pay-per-view (PPV) on DAZN.
Both men spoke at a final press conference ahead of their April 4 clash. Below is some of what they had to say.
Derek Chisora vs. Deontay Wilder press conference quotes
Derek Chisora
“I think everybody knows what time it is when I get in the ring,” said Chisora. “There’s no point of trying to say ‘oh, I was not ready’ or this and this. Boxing is so easy. It’s put your hands up and hit the other guy. That’s it. That is it. Everybody complicates boxing by doing all this and this. Boxing is so easy. Just put your hands on your chin and rush the other guy and hit him. That’s what I’m going to do. I have done it for 49 fights. Some I’ve won, some I’ve lost. But I keep bouncing back. But this time I won’t be bouncing back. I’ll be getting out the ring and going home…”
“O2 is going to be buzzing. My kids are coming. The only hardest thing about O2 for me will be that ring walk. But after first bell goes everything will be easy for me. But I can guarantee you, we might not even see round two. You understand? Because the way I’m thinking right now, I’m so fit and I’m so ready for this fight, we might not even see round two. I might say ‘you know what? Fuck it. Let’s go.’ What’s there? Fuck it…”
Deontay Wilder
“Just ready to go,” said Wilder. “I mean, the talking has been done. The training has been done. Here we are. The final presser. Only thing we have left is the weigh-in and time to fight. The hardest part is just the waiting. This is the hardest part. Waiting on that time. I’m ready to go. I’ve been telling everybody I had to heal and it took a long time for me to heal. But, sometimes it takes those times to get to the point because sometimes we can rush things as being human…”
“I have to feel right. It’s many times I should’ve cancelled different fights because physically I wasn’t there but mentally I just wanted to see what I would do in certain wars. Like I said before, I only got into this business because I was a father that risked my life to save a girl with spina bifida life. I come from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where we believe in football and basketball. Mostly football. And as a child you want to do as you see and that was my plan all along. Not that I could go to school anymore and participate in those things. To make me a professional I had to go to the school of hard knocks…”
Fight prediction
Both men are over 40 and really should not be fighting anymore. Chisora is in better form, however, and will most likely dominate on Saturday night. Wilder has lost four of his last six bouts and is clearly not in his prime at all. If you are a fan of the American, fight night is going to be tough to watch. Expect a stoppage win for Chisora within eight rounds.
