Examining the Last Three Opponents of David Benavidez
David Benavidez vs. Oleksandr Gvozdyk – June 15, 2024
Benavidez faced Oleksandr Gvozdyk in his first fight at light heavyweight, winning by unanimous decision. The judges scored the fight 119-109, 117-111, and 116-112 in favour of Benavidez. This victory gave “The Mexican Monster” the interim WBC light heavyweight title. He used his jab effectively throughout and threw combinations off the back of that. Gvozdyk had occasional success with left-right combinations, but Benavidez was the deserved winner.
Benavidez vs. Demetrius Andrade – November 25, 2023
Benavidez faced the talented, undefeated Demetrius Andrade and showed his devastating power. He backed “Boo Boo” up in the opening round, cutting off the ring and successfully landing eye-catching shots. “Boo Boo” looked to land quick flurries and move, which gave him success in the first couple of rounds. The dominance ramped up in round three, with Benavidez landing a series of body shots. This dominance continued in round four, with “The Monster Bandera Roja” scoring a knockdown. Andrade was pummeled in round five but tried to fire back, showcasing his admirable bravery.
The Phoenix native continued to have notable success in round six – but the pressure was having a clear effect on the Rhode Island fighter. At the end of round six, the work from Benavidez finally broke “Boo Boo” and his corner indicated he would not come out for the seventh round. It was a dominant showing from David Benavidez.
Benavidez vs. Caleb Plant – March 25, 2023
There was plenty of animosity in the build-up to Plant-Benavidez. But the sell-out crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas witnessed David Benavidez earn a unanimous decision win against Caleb Plant. The Nashville native started the brighter, boxing well in the pocket, picking his shots smartly and moving well. These tactics worked perfectly during the opening rounds before Benavidez’s pressure tactics helped him take over the fight.
Despite the strong start from Plant, it was a convincing win for “The Mexican Monster,” with the judges scorecards reading 117-111, 116-112 and 115-113. Despite the varied scorecards, there was no doubt the strong end to the fight was enough for Benavidez.
