‘This Is Something for the Fans’: David Benavidez Exclusive Interview About Oleksandr Gvozdyk Bout
David Benavidez (28-0, 24 KOs) says that his upcoming clash against Oleksandr Gvozdyk (20-1, 16 KOs) is part of a card meant to be a treat for the fans.
Their bout takes place just before Gervonta Davis defends his WBA lightweight title against Frank Martin. The Premier Boxing Champions card will take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. Fight fans in the United States and the United Kingdom can catch the action live as a pay-per-view on Prime Video. PPV.com and TrillerTV will also have the card available in several markets.
Ahead of his clash on Saturday, Benavidez spoke with Big Fight Weekend’s Dan Rafael. Below is some of what he had to say.
David Benavidez Speaks With Dan Rafael
On Not Being the Main Event
“We had the opportunity of doing my own pay-per-view, but then when Luis DeCubas called me saying there’s an opportunity we can do this together, I put ego aside and I strictly thought about the fans. This is definitely going to be a treat for the fans. If I was a fan, I would love to see this card, just going there and enjoying the fights. And I feel like at the end of the day this is what we’re all here for…This is the type of cards I want to fight [on]. I had no problem stepping aside and going co-main event. I’m actually really happy that I get to fight, go to the dressing room, get dressed and watch the [Davis vs. Martin] fight. This is something for the fans and they’re really going to appreciate this.”

On Gvozdyk
“Gvozdyk, I’ve known him, I’ve watched him a lot. I’ve watched him up close and personal because my brother [José Benavidez Jr.] used to fight on his cards, the same cards on Top Rank. And I’ve sparred him. I sparred him when I was 21. Actually, I sparred him a lot. I know how he fights, I know what he’s looking for. And me just watching film of him and studying as much as I can, I see a lot of things in him that I can expose. I’ve already exposed him in sparring but now I’m getting older. I’m stronger, I’m faster, I’m better…I really don’t try to see him as old, has a layoff. I’m really prepared for the best Oleksandr Gvozdyk there is possible…Just training like that, training for the best. It’s gonna make me prepared for whatever he does.”
