Recap of Natasha Jonas vs. Meyer
Jonas started the faster, landing some good combinations to the body and head of her American opponent. Mayer grew into the fight in round four with some eye-catching heavy hooks. Some rounds were extremely close, with both having success. Mayer had more success towards the end of the fight as the Brit began to tire, but it wasn’t enough, as the Liverpudlian won a split decision, with the judges scorecards reading 96-94, 96-95 for Jonas, and one judge scoring it 97-93 to Mayer.
When asked after the fight what comes next, Jonas said: “Unfortunately, I can’t be around forever – and this is probably my last year in boxing.” Knowing it’s likely her last year in boxing, Jonas seemingly has plans away from a Mayer rematch.
Sandy Ryan
Sandy Ryan (6-1-1, 2 KOs) has enjoyed an impressive start to her professional career, avenging a loss to Erica Farias. Ryan also fought to a controversial split draw against Jessica McCaskill. She is impressive defensively and counters well in her fights. The Brit is a slick operator, and a potential bout against Jonas is a mouthwatering prospect.
Jessica McCaskill
Jessica McCaskill (12-3-1, 5 KOs) is the current IBO, WBA and WBC champion, who has defeated Cecilia Braekhus twice and fought Katie Taylor and Sandy Ryan. McCaskill is a brilliant pressure fighter who throws every punch with purpose. “CasKILLA” vs. Jonas would be a fascinating contest that would seemingly attract plenty of interest with the belts available.
Whatever comes next for Jonas, it’s been a memorable career, and after the win against Mayer, it looks set to be an eventful final year in boxing.
