From Amateur Icon to Professional Legend

Appearing on his Instagram, Vasyl Lomachenko said: “First and foremost, I want to thank my lord and saviour Jesus Christ for guiding a prideful young man down a path that repeatedly showed me that fame, legacy and recognition are not the true purposes of life.

“I am grateful for every defeat and victory, both in the ring and in life.

“I am thankful that, as my career comes to an end, I have generated clarity about the direction a person must take in order to achieve true victory.

“Not just in the ring but in the whole self. Only then can one achieve their true reward.

“I thank God for my honest and kind parents for their care, love and warmth throughout my life.

Vasyl Lomachenko: From 396-1 to World Champion

His amateur career was exceptional, boasting a record of 396-1. He reigned supreme in the amateur ranks, capturing Olympic gold at the Beijing and London games.

Loma is widely considered one of the greatest amateurs of all time, which built immense anticipation for his professional debut. The mercurial southpaw shone throughout his pro career, retiring with a record of 18-3, 12 KOs). His record doesn’t do him justice, he’s a generational talent who pursued greatness across multiple weight classes.

Remarkably, in just his second professional bout, he faced Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title, losing by split decision. A surprise loss to Teofimo Lopez and a defeat to Devin Haney followed in later years. Those setbacks were offset by many notable triumphs.

In only his third fight, Lomachenko outboxed Gary Russell Jr to win the vacant WBO featherweight title via majority decision. Other standout victories came against Roman Martinez, Guillermo Rigondeaux and most recently, George Kambosos Jr to win the IBF lightweight world title.

Vasyl Lomachenko, one of boxing’s most decorated fighters, has officially retired at 37 and will be remembered for many generations to come.
