Sergey Kovalev names opponent for Terence Crawford – ’the world would be happy to see it’
Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) created history on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, dethroning Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) by unanimous decision.
The win ensured “Bud” became a three-division undisputed champion and four-division lineal champion.
Looking to the future for Crawford, the former light heavyweight world champion has revealed to Seconds Out one fighter he would like to see Crawford face, presenting an opportunity for the Omaha native to challenge a fighter deemed by many as one of the best in boxing.
Sergey Kovalev reveals one opponent for Terence Crawford in new weight class
Crawford vs Canelo saw the American execute his game plan brilliantly, staying mobile and picking his moments to engage, which he did impressively throughout the 12 rounds.
He never seemed to be in trouble, even when Alvarez tried to increase the pressure. “Bud” even began to sit down on his punches, and his power appeared to be felt by Canelo. The fight went to the judges’ scorecards, which read 116-112 and 115-113 (x2).
In an interview with Seconds Out, Kovalev revealed the one opponent he would like to face Crawford after Bud’s historic win over Canelo:
“[Dmitry] Bivol,” Kovalev told Seconds Out during a recent interview. “It would be very interesting to watch this fight. They should do this; the world would be happy to see it.”
The Future for Terence Crawford
The legacy for “Bud” Crawford is now secure following his impressive victory over Canelo. Since this win, many are asking what comes next for Crawford.
It remains to be seen whether the Omaha native will fight again or retire at the top.
It’s difficult to see another bout as more financially rewarding than a Canelo rematch. A move to 160 could be possible to obtain another world title in another weight class.
A fight against Bivol looks unlikely for the foreseeable future, with Bivol (24-1, 12 KOs) more likely to face Artur Beterbiev (21-1, 20 KOs) following his return from back surgery.
The Tokmak native could look to face the elevated WBC light heavyweight champion David Benavidez (30-0, 24 KOs) to become a two-time undisputed champion.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility for Bivol to drop down and face Crawford at 168lbs, but there are lots of moving parts that would need to come together to make this happen.
