Terence Crawford Addresses Canelo Rumours – Looking at What’s Next for ‘Bud’ Crawford
On August 3/4 at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, we saw Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) create history, moving up in weight to win the WBA super welterweight title from the talented Uzek fighter, Israil Madrimov (10-1-1, 7 KOs). It was a chess match for much of the bout, with both having limited success. “Bud” impressed the judges towards the end of the fight, putting his shots together well, which was enough for him to get the unanimous decision verdict. The judge’s scorecards read 115-113×2 and 116-112. Fans were able to catch the entire card on pay-per-view on ESPN+, DAZN and Prime Video. Those in the United Kingdom could also do the same with TNT Sports Box Office. DAZN and PPV.com also carried the action for the rest of the world. Following this win by “Bud” attention now turns to what’s next for the Omaha native.
Terence Crawford Next Fight: Possible Opponents for ‘Bud’ Crawford
Canelo Alvarez
Following his first success at 154 pounds, Crawford has been linked with a move to 168 pounds to face Canelo Alvarez in a bout that would attract plenty of attention. Earlier on the August 3 card, Turki Alalshikh was asked about Crawford vs. Canelo and said: “I [gave Alvarez] an offer. If he’s smart, he’ll accept it.” He continued: “If they accept, we want to see this fight.” If Alvarez defeats Edgar Berlanga on September 14, could we see a mega fight between Crawford and Canelo?
In his post-fight interview after the Madrimov fight, “Bud” was asked about the Canelo fight, and said: “If the money’s right, you got a fight…. But, at the same time he’s got a fight he’s focused on. I’m going to go back to my family. i’m going to relax. I’m going to enjoy this and enjoy all the accomplishments I’ve made in the sport of boxing.” He added: “It’s not important to me. It’s just another milestone to greatness I suppose. And, financially wise, too.”
Winner of Vergil Ortiz Jr-Serhii Bohachuk
Undefeated heavy-handed super welterweight star Vergil Ortiz Jr. has two first-round KOs in his two fights this year. The Texan fighter will return to the ring on August 3 to face the dangerous Ukrainian fighter Serhii Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs) for the WBC interim super welterweight title.
Crawford could feasibly face the winner of this fight and further cement his place at the top table in the 154-pound division. Both are heavy punchers, as proven by their KO records, but “Bud” now has a huge win at 154 pounds and will fancy his chances to add another title and further cement his P4P legacy.
