Respected trainer Robert Garcia warns Terence Crawford not to face one fighter

Terence Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) created history on September 13 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where he defeated Canelo Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs) by unanimous decision, with scores of 116-112 and 115-113 (x2) to become a three-division undisputed champion and four-division lineal champion. Turki Alalshikh hinted at Crawford vs David Benavidez after the fight, but legendary boxing trainer Robert Garcia has spoken to Fight Hub TV, warning “Bud” against taking that fight.

‘I wouldn’t do it’: Robert Garcia warns Terence Crawford against facing one fighter

Crawford boxed diligently and executed his game plan to perfection. He stayed mobile while picking his shots impressively. He appeared to grow in confidence as the fight progressed. One thing that impressed most was his ability to get back on top once Canelo closed the distance.

Talking about a potential fight between Crawford and Benavidez, Garcia said:

“There’s no way. Crawford’s just got the biggest win in his career, and one of the biggest wins in history. He doesn’t need to go out there and risk…Benavidez is too big, too big, too strong.

“We don’t, you know, don’t want to see a champion do so much and accomplish so much and then end his career with a bad choice, bad fight that he shouldn’t take. I wouldn’t do it.”

Terence Crawford’s trainer addresses potential Benavidez fight

Following Crawford’s memorable win over Canelo, his trainer  Brian ‘BoMac’ McIntyre spoke to the media and was asked about a potential bout against David Benavidez at 168lbs.

BoMac’s answer was clear: “Nah man, we ain’t doing that fight.”

It appears Benavidez is not a viable option for Team Crawford, and the reasons mentioned by Garcia are understandable. It feels like a rematch with Canelo is the most financially rewarding option for the Omaha native.

Could Crawford drop down to 160lbs and face Janibek, Carlos Adames, or Erislandy Lara to try and win a world title? Would any of those bouts appeal to Crawford, or could we see him retire at the top of his game?
