Both won their last fights, with Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) defeating William Zepeda by unanimous decision (118-110 x2 and 119-109) on the Ring III fight card, while Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) defeated Arnold Barboza Jr by unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, and 118-110) on the widely-criticized May 2 Times Square card.
When asked about Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson, and what was the most compelling aspect of the matchup, De La Hoya said:
“It’s gonna be a great fight! Teo’s a hell of a fighter. I love Teo, but I love Shakur. His style is almost impossible to break, but if there’s a fighter who can break it, it’s Teo.
“But it’s gonna be a hell of a fight, because I love Shakur because he doesn’t run. He’s right there in front of you. So it’s up to Teo to do something, but I think it’s gonna be a great fight, great fight for boxing.”
