Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson – ex Stevenson opponent has his say

On January 31 at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson will headline the “The Ring 6” fight card, with Lopez’s WBO super lightweight title up for grabs.

Stevenson is moving up in weight and is the current WBC lightweight champion. This is one of the best fights you could make in boxing, and a huge event for America. Former two-weight world champion Oscar Valdez recently spoke to Fight Hub TV and broke the fight down.

Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson set for January 31

Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) delivered a career-best performance last time out, defeating William Zepeda by unanimous decision (118-110 x2 and 119-109). on the  Ring III fight card at the Louis Armstrong Stadium in Queens, New York City.

Lopez (22-1, 13 KOs) won his last fight, defeating Arnold Barboza Jr by unanimous decision (116-112, 116-112, and 118-110) on the widely-criticized May 2 Times Square card.

In 2022, Stevenson faced Oscar Valdez, with the WBC and WBO super featherweight titles on the line. The American dominated from start to finish, knocking Valdez down in the sixth round, winning by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 118-109 x2 and 117-110.

Valdez, having fought Stevenson, has great insight into Shakur’s ability and discussed the January 31 main event when talking to Fight Hub:

“It’s going to be a chess game inside that ring, because Teofimo Lopez is a tremendous athlete. I’ve seen him, personally seen him, with both eyes, the way he trains, the way his abilities allow him to do different things inside the ring is abnormal.

“But you got Shakur Stevenson, the best fighter, defensive-wise, out there. So, it’s going to be an interesting one. The one I’m looking forward to (the most),” said Valdez.

When asked if he sees it as a 50/50, Valdez said:

“I truly, honestly look at it as a 50/50. I’m trying to be neutral when it comes to not being biased, because I am friends with Teofimo, and I have a good relationship with Shakur Stevenson, being as we stepped in the ring. I have respect for both fighters, but looking at it, focusing on both fighters, I see it as a 50/50” said Valdez.
