All results from Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson on January 31

Keyshawn Davis vs Jamaine Ortiz

In the next fight on the card, it was Keyshawn Davis (14-0, 10 KOs) vs Jamaine Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 KOs) in the super lightweight division.

Davis started brightly, working well off his jab, while Ortiz struggled to close the distance. The speed of Davis helped him control the majority of the early rounds. Ortiz looked in great shape but struggled to land anything of note early on.

Despite not much happening of note in the first half of the fight, the speed and activity of Davis gave him most of the rounds. The Norfolk native began to push Ortiz back in round seven. The pattern of the fight continued with Davis landing some punches, but nothing of consequence to gain a step. A left to the body in round 11 forced Ortiz to take a knee, confirming the dominance of Davis. “The Businessman” applied plenty of pressure in the final  round, picking his shots impressively as Ortiz went into survival mode.

Davis landed another left to the body in the final round, dropping Ortiz again, leading the referee to wave the fight off, with 12 seconds left in the fight, awarding Keyshawn the final round TKO victory.

Bruce Carrington vs Carlos Castro

It was the turn of the featherweights next, as Bruce Carrington (17-0, 10 KOs) faced Carlos Castro (30-4, 14 KOs) for the vacant WBC featherweight title.

It was a cagey opening two rounds, with little action in both, but the accurate jab of Carrington saw him snap back Castro’s head on multiple occasions. Carrington stepped on the gas in the third round, landing some impressive combinations.

Castro struggled to close the distance in the first few rounds of the fight, and when he did, he looked uncertain because of Carrington’s speed. The Mexican landed a big right hand in the fourth that rocked “Shu Shu,” who retreated. More right hands landed, leaving Carrington dazed. Another big right hand caught Carrington again in the fifth. The American fighter looked confident behind his jab in the early rounds before he was buzzed in round four.

The competitive rounds continued, with Castro having his moments, but Carrington looked in control when working behind the jab. In the ninth round, Carrington landed a huge right hand and followed up with a vicious combination that left Castro on the canvas, unable to beat the referee’s count. Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington is the new WBC featherweight champion, winning by KO.

Jarrell Miller vs Kingsley Ibeh

It was the turn of the heavyweights next, with Jarrell Miller (27-1-2, 22 KOs) against Kingsley Ibeh (16-3-1, 14 KOs).

It was a largely pedestrian first round, with both fighters pawing at each other. Ibeh enjoyed a strong second round, putting together some nice combinations towards the end of the round. In truly bizarre circumstances, Miller took off his toupee before the bell for the third round and threw it into the crowd!

Ibeh continued to do more than Miller in the next couple of rounds, while the toupee-less Miller continued to just walk forward and not do much. Miller appeared to be turning the tables at the midway point of the fight, with Ibeh tiring in the sixth round, while “Big Baby Miller” began to push his opponent back. As Ibeh shrank, the further the fight went, Miller began to finally outwork his opponent.

At the end of the ninth round, both fighters finally sat down on their punches, landing heavy punches. It was alargerly forgettable fight, with Miller outworking Ibeh in the later rounds to win a unanimous decision, with judges’ scorecards of 96-94 in favour of Ibeh, while the other two judges had it 97-93 x2 for Miller, awarding him the split decision victory.

Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams vs Wendy Toussaint

Up next on the Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson undercard was Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams (20-1, 13 KOs) vs Wendy Toussaint (17-4, 7 KOs) in the super middleweight division. Williams was supposed to challenge for Carlos Adames’ WBC middleweight title before the Dominican fighter withdrew due to illness.

It was a competitive opening round, where Williams gained the middle of the ring, but Toussaint also had joy with his right hand. Over the next couple of rounds, Williams continued to try to force the pressure, but Toussaint continued to have success with the right hand.

Williams seemed intent on working the body of his opponent early on. At the end of the fourth round, Williams landed a beautiful left uppercut, knocking Toussaint down, who did well to survive the round.

The pattern of Williams walking forward and landing the best shots continued for the rest of the bout.

It was vital that Williams stayed on the card, and he did, winning the fight by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 98-91 and 99-90 x2.

Ziyad Almaayouf vs Kevin Castillo

The first fight of the night saw Ziyad Almaayouf (7-1-1, 1 KO) face Kevin Castillo (6-2-1, 0 KOs) in the super lightweight division.

Almaayouf started well, throwing treble jabs, controlling the distance and tempo of the opening round. Towards the end of the round, the Saudi fighter landed a double left jab before landing a right hand that knocked Castillo down.

Ziyad then seemed to neglect his jab over the next two rounds, with Castillo rocking the Saudi fighter with a right hand in the third round. The Ecuadorian continued to land more right hands, hurting Almaayouf, with Castillo gaining momentum.

The Saudi fighter seemed unable to move his head off the line, and Castillo continued to land the right hand and outwork Almaayouf. Despite the support for Almaayouf’s career, this was a deserved defeat. The judges’ scorecard read 78-73, and 77-74 x2, awarding Castillo the deserved upset victory.
