The ex-IBF flyweight world champion has enjoyed a memorable career, making many talented fighters look ordinary. In what looks to be his final bout, Sunny made it clear after the sixth-round loss to Galal Yafai that he believes that was his last fight. In what looks to be the final bow for “Showtime,” Big Fight Weekend are paying tribute to the immensely talented 28-year-old by ranking his most memorable wins.
Sunny Edwards Record: Looking at His Five Most Memorable Fights
5. Sunny Edwards vs. Ross Murray – November 27, 2017
“Showtime” met Ross Murray on November 27, 2017 for the vacant WBO European super flyweight title at the Grange St Paul’s Hotel, Godliman Street, City of London. Edwards looked his usual slick self before beating his opponent via a fourth round TKO. A truly memorable night for team Edwards as their man won his first pro title.
4. Junior Granados – December 15, 2018
On December 15, 2018, at the Brentwood Centre, Brentwood, Sunny “Showtime” Edwards won the vacant WBO international super flyweight title against Junior Granados. Despite being knocked down in round number two, Edwards showed his composure by going straight back to his gameplan of boxing and moving, which saw him run out a comfortable unanimous decision winner, with the judges scorecards reading 99-91, 97-92 and 98-91.
3. Andres Campos – June 10, 2023
Edwards faced the unbeaten Chilean Andres Campos at Wembley’s OVO Arena on June 10, 2023. This was an IBF flyweight title defence which Sunny won unanimously. The judges scorecards read 117-111 x3. At times Edwards was imperious, making his opponent miss while picking him off at will. The Brit seemed to get bored as the fight wore on and Campos had his moments, but ultimately it was a routine night for Team Edwards.
2. Felix Alvarado – November 11, 2022
On November 11, 2022, IBF flyweight world champion, Sunny Edwards faced the 33-year-old durable Nicaraguan boxer Felix Alvarado in a title defence at the Sheffield Arena. The Brit boxed brilliantly at times, picking off his opponent almost at will. Alvarado eventually had success down the home straight, but Edwards dug in to win by unanimous decision, with the scorecards reading 115-113, 115-113, 116-112.
1. Moruti Mthalane – April 30, 2021
Sunny Edwards lived up to his nickname “Showtime” when he dethroned IBF world flyweight champion Moruti Mthalane at the York Hall, Bethnal Green on April 30, 2021. The Sutton-born fighter put on what can only be described as a boxing clinic. Edwards used the ring brilliantly to control the distance and tempo of the fight against a man who had not lost for over 10 years. It was a masterclass from Sunny and he obtained a thoroughly deserved unanimous decision win, with the scorecards reading 120-108, 118-111 and a surprisingly close 115-113.
