‘The Reason Why’: Eddy Reynoso on Not Training Garcia or Teofimo

When Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez fight, many in the boxing world tune in. This is not only because of their abilities in the ring but also because of their ability to create hype for a fight during the build-up. Both men return to action on May 2 on the much anticipated Times Square card. “Kingry” will face Rolly Romero, while Lopez will face Arnold Barboza Jr. It was reported that both had reached deals to be trained by Eddy Reynoso – but the renowned trainer has now cleared this up and confirmed where his focus lies.

Towards the end of last year, lineal/WBO super lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez agreed a deal to have the much-respected trainer Eddy Reynoso join his father, Teofimo Lopez Sr., in his corner. It was recently revealed by “The Takeover” that Reynoso will not be his trainer.

Reynoso will also not be working with Ryan Garcia as originally planned. The 48-year-old Mexican trainer spoke to Dan Rafael at Fight Freaks Unite and revealed the reasons for not continuing with Lopez and Garcia: “The reason why I couldn’t work with Ryan or Teofimo is because I like to focus 100 percent on my boxers and their dates and my other boxers are close together and it’s impossible to schedule a conscientious camp,” Reynoso said. “I couldn’t be in their corner that day and for me it’s difficult and unprofessional to work that way.

Revealing his focus on May 3 in Riyadh, Reynoso said: “Besides, I need 10 weeks for a camp and with Teo it would be difficult since I would only be with him for three weeks since I’m going to Riyadh three weeks before with Saul and Jaime. Ryan, for his part, is working hard in San Diego with his father for this fight.”

In addition to his responsibilities with Canelo and Munguia, Reynoso will have two other fighters on the May 3 card with middleweight Marco Verde and Cuban light heavyweight Brayan Leon fighting.
