Ryan Garcia’s likely date for first title defence emerges

One of the biggest stars in boxing is Ryan Garcia. He has dazzled in the ring and caused controversy outside. However, following his recent dominant win over Mario Barrios to become the WBC welterweight world champion, his career appears to have a new lease of life. Garcia’s manager, Guadalupe Valencia, has now revealed to Dan Rafael at Fight Freaks Unite, a likely date for his fighter’s first title defence.

Ryan Garcia becomes world champion against Mario Barrios

Ryan Garcia (25-2, 20 KOs) was becoming known for his antics outside of the ring, and his failed drug tests and no-contest against Devin Haney as much as he was for his obvious skills inside the ring.

“Kingry” started quickly against Barrios, scoring a knockdown in the opening round. He proved to be too fast and too accurate for the brave Barrios, who struggled to land anything of note throughout. Garcia won by unanimous decision, with scorecards of 119-108, 120-107, and 118-109.

Guadalupe Valencia gives Ryan Garcia update

According to Ryan Garcia’s manager, Guadalupe Valencia, the Los Angeles fighter is recovering well after straining his hand in the win over Barrios. “The hand is much better,” Valencia said. “Luckily, he only has to rest it. He will start full camp top of May.”

Rafael also confirms, as per Valencia, that Garcia’s likely return will be in July, where he will look to headline a Ring magazine card. Valencia also remains hopeful that discussions regarding the opponent will start this week.

It remains to be seen who Garcia will face next, but after his win against Barrios, he made it clear who he wants to face: “You know who I want. He’s right there (at ringside), Shakur Stevenson, let’s go,” said Garcia.

Stevenson has spoken about being open to the fight, but has mentioned a rehydration clause. Garcia made it clear that he will not fight again with a rehydration clause, following his stoppage loss to Gervonta Davis back in 2023.

Devin Haney, in a unification fight, would be a huge moment for American boxing, but he has another unification bout pencilled in for May 30 against Rolly Romero.
