The controversy surrounding Ryan Garcia has taken another dark turn following his banning by the WBC after the Californian fighter made a series of racist comments on a social media livestream, which prompted his parents Henry and Lisa Garcia to release a statement condemning the behaviour of the Victorville-born fighter.

Garcia is already banned for one year for doping and is also facing serious vandalism charges in California. His fondness for substances has also been addressed by many in the boxing world. These constant controversies have taken a new, dark turn as the Californian fighter went on a racist rant while on a social media livestream.

The Golden Boy-promoted fighter used the n-word and ranted about George Floyd, which came along with a now-deleted post, which said: “Fuck all n—— and Fuck all Muslims.” The livestream tirade saw him use the n-word multiple times alongside a sickening comment about George Floyd: “I hate n——, I’m anti-black, I’m the KKK. Hey, let’s go bring George Floyd back to life and go kill that n—– again,” Garcia said during the livestream.

More Controversy

The livestream outburst and WBC banning are just the latest moments in a very public downward spiral for Garcia. He received a one-year suspension and was ordered to forfeit his $1.1 million official contract purse from his April 20 fight against Devin Haney as punishment for failing two Voluntary Anti-Doping Association urine tests for the performance-enhancing drug Ostarine.

While reportedly intoxicated Garcia was arrested on June 8 for felony vandalism at the Waldorf Astoria in Beverly Hills, California. This came after the hotel said he caused around $15,000 in damage to his room and a hallway.

WBC Statement and Worried Parents

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman was seemingly disgusted by Garcia’s outburst and announced via social media that he has banned him from the sanctioning body: “Exercising my authority as president of the WBC , I am hereby expelling Ryan Garcia from any activity with our organization,” Sulaiman posted. “We reject any form of discrimination. I fear for Ryan’s well being as he has declined multiple attempts for our help with mental health and substance abuse assessment and treatment. May God guide him and help him.”

The latest controversy has seemingly upset his parents, who quickly issued a statement condemning their sons behaviour: “Our son has recently made statements that do not align with his, or our family’s true character or beliefs,” they said in the statement. “Our family unequivocally does not support any statements he has made regarding race or religion — these do not reflect who Ryan truly is and how he was raised. Those who know Ryan can attest to this fact.”

The statement continued: “Ryan has been open about his ongoing struggle with mental health over the years and as a family we are committed to ensuring and encouraging that he receives the necessary help to navigate this very challenging time and address both his immediate and long-term well-being. We appreciate the continued support, prayers and compassion.”
