Richard Torrez Jr gives candid take on Keyshawn Davis’ power
On January 31 at Madison Square Garden, Keyshawn Davis (14-0, 10 KOs) returned to action at super lightweight, becoming the first professional fighter to stop Jamaine Ortiz (20-3-1, 10 KOs). It was a dominant performance from “The Businessman,” scoring two knockdowns in a dream-like first performance at 140.
Davis showed power as the WBO lightweight champion, but carrying that power up to super lightweight was most impressive. Heavyweight contender Richard Torrez recently spoke to Fight Hub TV, revealing just how hard Davis punches.
Keyshawn Davis defeats Jamaine Ortiz in style
Davis started well, working off his jab, keeping Ortiz at a distance. Davis showcased impressive hand speed and movement, which helped him control much of the early part of the fight. Ortiz looked in shape, but he just couldn’t land anything of note on his opponent.
The Norfolk native stepped on the gas in round seven, pushing Ortiz back. A heavy left to the body of Ortiz forced him to take a knee, confirming the dominance of Davis. “The Businessman” applied more pressure in the final round, picking his punches with intent, forcing Ortiz into survival mode.
Davis landed another left to the body in the final round, forcing Ortiz to take a knee, leading the referee to wave the fight off, awarding Keyshawn the final round TKO victory, with only 12 seconds left in the fight.
Richard Torrez Jr reveals just how hard Keyshawn Davis hits
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Torrez was asked if he had ever sparred Keyshawn Davis: “Yeah, I sparred Keyshawn. I’ll tell you what, I go hard on Keyshawn, cause’ Keyshawn goes hard.
“Everyone’s like ‘Oh, Richard, why do you go hard on the lighter weight classes?’ Keyshawn punches like a heavyweight. I ain’t going light. You can tell anybody. People will say, ‘Don’t spar with Richard, cause’ Richard’s not gonna go easy on you,’ and it’s because of guys like Keyshawn, guys like Shu Shu (Carrington), guys like Khalil Coe, like all these other guys that we would spar in the amateurs, we’re cracking. I’m gonna crack back. Just because I’m a heavyweight, it doesn’t mean nothing. You’re a world champion, we’re sparring,” said Torrez.
