Eddie Hearn Reflects on Katie Taylor Win, ‘Baffled’ by Draw Scorecard

On July 11 at Madison Square Garden, Katie Taylor (25-1, 6 KOs) once again got the better of her nemesis Amanda Serrano (47-4-1, 31 KOs). It was a much quieter fight than their first two wars, but Taylor got her hand raised again. Following this historic win, Eddie Hearn spoke in a media scrum in a video posted by Fight Hub TV, where he reflected on Taylor’s historic triumph, while criticising one judge.

The noise was deafening inside MSG as both fighters made their way to the ring. It was a cagey opening three rounds, with neither throwing much. Serrano finished the third with a clean punch, while Taylor stole the fourth with a strong finish.

Serrano had a promising eighth round, picking her shots well, while Taylor produced her best work in the final round. It was a largely cagey affair, with several close rounds. Although it lacked the drama of the first two fights, Taylor got the nod once again, by majority decision with scorecards of 95-95 and 97-93 x2.

Some have called it a Katie Taylor masterclass, but it was made easier by Serrano’s decision to fight at range. This tactic played into Taylor’s strengths, with the Irish fighter now holding a 3-0 record over her arch nemesis.

Reflecting on Taylor’s win, Hearn said: “She can’t live with Katie Taylor’s skill and speed. Man, how do you give Amanda Serrano five rounds in that fight? I respect her, but after six rounds, it’s like she just conceded the fight.. She lost seven, eight, nine and ten, probably six, five…I mean, maybe the first three rounds were like nip and tuck, but after that, it was all Katie Taylor.

“So, just bizarre from Mark Lyson (Judge who scored it 95-95). He’s a great referee, great judge, but I’m just baffled. I mean, you get Netflix with a narrative, calling it a draw as well, I think, which is just people who don’t know what they’re watching do it easily tonight, you know?”

Eddie Hearn: Showing Skill and Making it Easy

“Just use your skill, use your feet, win the fight at a canter. And that’s what we know she could do, but she never chooses to do. So it was nice just to use that skill tonight and have an easy night.

“And obviously her face, you know, her body, it’s unusual to go back to the changing room and she’s like, ‘That was easy.’ You know, so respect to Amanda, thanks to MVP. It was an amazing night and she’s the greatest female fighter of all time,” added Hearn.
