Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr – Eddie Hearn casts doubt on what Team Ortiz really want

On November 8 at the Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, TX, Vergil Ortiz Jr retained his WBC interim super welterweight title, stopping Erickson Lubin in round two. After the win, Ortiz faced off with Jaron “Boots” Ennis, leaving the boxing world demanding its Jaron Ennis vs Vergil Ortiz Jr in 2026.

With negotiations ongoing, Eddie Hearn has spoken to Fight Hub TV, casting doubt on whether Team Ortiz wants to face “Boots” Ennis.

Following Ortiz’s impressive win over Lubin, he spoke in the ring to Chris Mannix and said:

“I’m in my prime. I’ll only be better from here.”

He then waved Ennis (35-0, 31 KOs) over for a face-off and said to his rival: “Do you got a yes for me.” 

Ennis responded quickly: “Yes.”

The Philadelphia fighter said: “It’s the best fight in boxing,” Ennis told Mannix. “He done a great job. He looked good. But I’m going to show the world why I’m the best in the world. 

“I’m going to back it up and show the world why I’m the best in the world.”

Both then proceeded to blame each other’s teams for words said, before Ennis fired a warning to his rival:

“I’m going to make you pay for everything they said.”

Revealing his thoughts regarding making Vergil Ortiz Jr vs Jaron Ennis, and the intentions of Team Ortiz, Hearn said:

“Once you start hearing things like we’re the a side and we want 10 million (sic)

“Ortiz has never been a world champion. Great fighter. Boots has been world champion, he’s been a unified champion, but neither of them are world champions now. They’re just the top two fighters in the division. 

“So, if you truly believe you’re the best, make the fight. And it will be really interesting to now see if they truly believe, ‘cause the fights there, the fights done, the money’s there, the Pay-Per-Views there. It’s a massive fight, but you can find an excuse if you don’t want to do it, so we’ll see.”

When asked if he sees the demands of Team Ortiz as an obstacle, Hearn said:

“Look, if the fight delivers, it does really well. The fighters gonna make a load of money. They’re going to make a load of money anyway.”

“We just want the fight, we just need to prove that we’re better than everybody else. But Vergil wants to fight, I have no doubt. Does the father? Does Robert Garcia? Does Rick Mirgian, probably not. Does Oscar De La Hoya? Probably not,”added Hearn.
