Jaime Munguia Reportedly Tests Positive – Surace Reacts

On May 3 in Riyadh, Suadi Arabia, Jaime Munguia secured immediate redemption by boxing diligently, earning a unanimous decision win over Bruno Surace in their rematch (117-111 x2 and 116-112. As reported by The Ring and confirmed by Dan Rafael and other outlets, Munguia has returned a positive VADA urine test for synthetic testosterone related to his rematch win over Surace. His French opponent has since called for immediate action to overturn the result.

Jaime Munguia’s Victory in Doubt After Positive Test

Surace Demands Action After A Sample Controversy

It seemed Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) was set to move on to bigger fights following his rematch win against Surace (26-1-2, 5 KOs). However, those plans now appear in tatters after VADA informed all relevant parties that his A-sample returned an adverse analytical finding for synthetic testosterone, following a urine sample collected on May 4 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Munguia has 10 days to request analysis of his B-sample. If that also returns an adverse finding, he will likely face a suspension and see his win over Surace changed to a no-contest.

Surace Reacts to Positive Test

“I’m shocked by the news that Jaime Munguia tested positive for a banned substance,” Surace, 26, told The Ring on Thursday. “There’s no place in boxing for cheating; the sport is dangerous enough already.

“I went to Mexico and knocked out Munguia fair and square in December and I was gracious enough to give him a rematch in May. He knew he could not beat me on a level playing field. I trust that this result will be overturned immediately,” added Surace.

Jamie Munguia had an indifferent 2024, finishing with a 2-2 record. What initially looked a promising start to 2025 may now have serious consequences, potentially impacting the rest of his career.
