Holly Holm gets world title shot on Amanda Serrano-Erika Cruz 2 undercard
Holly Holm (34-2-3, 9 KOs) will once again have the opportunity to become a boxing world champion when she faces Stephanie Han (11-0, 3 KOs).
Their bout will take place on the undercard of Amanda Serrano’s rematch against Erika Cruz at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Fight fans will be able to catch all the action live on DAZN. Han’s WBA lightweight world title will be at stake.
The bout will be Holm’s second since making her comeback to professional boxing. She had left the sport in 2013 and had been focused on MMA until her return in June of this year on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Julio César Chávez Jr.
Holly Holm gets world title shot against Stephanie Han
Holm, who will challenge Han on January 3, last fought for a major boxing championship in 2008. That year saw her successfully defend the WBC welterweight world title against Miriam Brakache. Holm also held the WBA welterweight world title, winning it in 2006 and defending it just once in 2007. She had also won other world titles during her first stint as a professional boxer, but those were awarded by lightly regarded organizations who have inconsistently given out those belts.
Han became the WBA lightweight world champion in February of this year. She made her first defence of it six months later against Paulina Angel. Han will attempt to make a second successful defence when she eventually faces Holm. Instead of fighting two-minute rounds, the pair will fight 10 three-minute rounds.
Reactions from the fighters
“From El Paso to the world stage, now I get to fight Holly Holm, in Puerto Rico next to the island’s greatest boxer in Amanda Serrano,” said Han in a press release. “Every sacrifice has led to this moment, and I’m grateful and excited for the opportunity. Equal opportunity at that, with 3-minute rounds.”
“I feel great,” said Holm in the press release. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to fight for a fourth weight division title and add to my legacy on Saturday, January 3. I’m thankful for MVP and this opportunity and look forward to fighting in Puerto Rico, an island with a deep boxing culture.”
