Hearn Disappointed In Saunders’ Recent Comments
It’s Canelo Alvarez fight week. This contest against current WBO Super Middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders starts with Saunders’s camp’s angle that they are getting slighted from the promoter that helped make the fight happen in Matchroom Boxing Managing Director Eddie Hearn.
Speaking with iFL TV recently, Hearn spoke on the recent barbs from Saunders which Billy Joe Saunder’s father Tom, who stated that there was “no royalty” and trust between the two last week talking to the lads at Boxing Social.
“I have a decent relationship with Billy Joe Saunders,” Hearn told IFL TV during an interview this past week. “I can’t tell you that we’re close. But I had a job to do for Billy Joe Saunders, which was deliver him the opportunities and the fights that no one else could or has delivered for him in his career. We all know that last year I got to deliver him the Canelo Alvarez fight, in 2020. We were one day away from announcing the fight [for last May 2 in Las Vegas]. Everything was signed and agreed upon, and COVID hit. And it was a real kick in the nuts.
The original plan was to face off on May 2 before COVID hit. Since then, the fight has been pushed back and rescheduled to take place this Saturday in front of a huge crowd at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas.
“And we had to put up with people saying, ‘When you gonna get Billy Joe Saunders a big fight? When you gonna …?’ And it’s like, ‘We had it.’ He went off, and he boxed Martin Murray [on December 4]. And now I delivered him the Canelo Alvarez fight. I can’t really do any more than that, so if he don’t like me or they don’t like me, then there’s not really a lot I can do.”
In the landscape of 168 pounders, let alone the sport, you won’t land a bigger fight than Martin Murray. But, all jokes aside, Hearn is right as he can’t control how Saunders’s team feels about him, but him landing the fight with Alvarez doesn’t get any bigger. I think all of this is fluff and something to speak on as we need some angle to speak on heading into Canelo Alvarez fight week.
