Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach 2: PBC Plan Summer Schedule
Dan Rafael has revealed in his Fight Freaks Unite Substack as per sources that Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach 2 will not happen on June 21 as originally planned. Following the controversy of the first fight, it’s clear the rematch is the only viable fight for both before they move on to more opportunities.
The reason for the delay has not been divulged by PBC, but they are working on an intriguing summer schedule that could include match-ups such as Tim Tszyu vs Keith Thurman and Sebastian Fundora vs Xander Zayas. It’s expected that we will see Davis vs Roach later this summer, either in July or August.
Gervonta Davis vs Lamont Roach 2: Controversy from First Fight
Many felt the original fight would be a routine win for “Tank,” but it proved anything but routine for the Baltimore native. Looking at the rules, round nine should have been scored a 10-8 round for Roach after Davis took a knee, which would have seen him win the fight by unanimous decision as opposed to a draw.
The controversy around the ninth round intensified after the fight when it became apparent that the New York State Athletic Commission’s replay official was unable to view the instant replay of the incident, with the commission calling it “a technical issue,” as to why they didn’t receive it from the production team. The taking of a knee was followed by the referee beginning the mandatory eight-count, before “Tank” retreated to his corner to have his face wiped with the count then abandoned.
Having his face wiped, was a rule violation from Davis that could have seen a point deduction or disqualification. Despite the commission admitting the count should have been administered fully by the referee, they declined to change the result. Team Roach appealed to the New York State Athletic Commission to investigate and they decided to stand by the original result to the dismay of many.
