Gervonta Davis Addresses Calls for Lamont Roach Rematch

On March 1 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, Gervonta Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) was expected to defeat the respected but in many eyes, overmatched Lamont Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs). The fight headlined a Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) card with fans globally able to catch the action as a pay-per-view (PPV) on either Prime Video or PPV.com. It was far from straightforward for Tank, with the fight going to the judge’s scorecards, which read 115-113 for Davis, while the other two read 114-114. With this verdict, Davis controversially retained his WBA lightweight title.

The opening rounds of the fight were close, with neither fighter throwing much. “Tank” was comfortable working off the back foot, making it difficult for Roach to pin him down.

From round five onward, both fighters began to up the ante. Roach mixed his punches impressively, punching in between Tank’s work, which served him well. Roach countered brilliantly in the eighth round with a right hand that rocked “Tank.” While Davis took the punch well, he continued to throw punches.

The ninth round was the biggest talking point of the fight. Davis bizarrely took a knee and retreated to his corner to get his face wiped. This strange incident wasn’t considered a knockdown, leaving many scratching their heads, as replays clearly showed a jab was thrown before. Roach continued to outland Davis, who had moments of success with his left hooks.

The fight ended, and many, including us at Big Fight Weekend, had Roach in front. It was close, but “Tank” just didn’t do enough. The majority decision verdict emphasised that the knockdown controversy in round nine ultimately cost Roach the fight.

Gervonta Davis Speaks Out

The immediate aftermath of the fight was full of rematch talk and “Tank” was asked at the press conference about the timetable for Davis-Roach 2: “It probably won’t be this year,” said Davis.

When pressed on a timeframe for a potential rematch, “Tank” said: “It’s definitely the one I want next.” He continued: “But it’s not going to be next.”

When referring to what could be next, and when can we expect an announcement: “You might see it in a minute,” Davis continued. “You definitely might see it in a minute.”
