Gervonta Davis officially announces December title fight

Just before we ring in 2020, unbeaten rising Star Gervonta Davis will headline a Showtime Boxing show in Atlanta going for a lightweight world title.

Davis made official on social media Friday evening that he will fight Yuriorkis Gamboa for the vacant WBA lightweight title on December 28th:

We wrote previously about Davis moving up in weight to face the 37 year old former three division world champion, Gamboa. This after Gamboa’s second-round destruction of Roman Martinez on the undercard of Davis’ win in July in Baltimore against Ricardo Nunez. Davis successfully defended his WBA Jr. Lightweight title and also scored an impressive second round TKO to improve to 22-0, 21 KOs.

Davis vacated the 130 lbs. belt to move up to lightweight and possible bigger fights.

Davis also recently settled his February arrest at a Virginia mall for assault. The court of Fairfax County reported the case had been dropped, as Davis had paid the accuser and undisclosed sum of money.

Davis had been charged with one count of assault, which is a misdemeanor, but did carry a maximum sentence of one year in jail and a $2,500 fine. The incident allegedly started from an altercation that Davis got into with another unidentified individual at an ATM machine in the shopping mall. When authorities were called, Davis had to apparently be physically restrained while screaming and trying to shove one of them, as well.

It is the third time that Davis has been arrested in the last three years.

The December 28th fight will be offered on Showtime Boxing, however Premier Boxing Champions and Mayweather Promotions that handle Davis would like to start having him on Pay-Per-View fights in the new year.

One fighter being mentioned is unified lightweight champ Vasily Lomachenko. Lomachenko, however is promoted by PBC rival, Top Rank Boxing, and it’s unlikely that they will do business with them/Davis on mega-type fight in the next 12-18 months.
