Galal Yafai And Tommy Frank Headline NXTGEN Card
On Saturday, August 19, Galal Yafai (4-0, 3 KOs) will take on Tommy Frank (15-3-1, 3 KOs) in one of Matchroom Boxing’s NXTGEN events. The flyweight bout will headline a card at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, England. DAZN will broadcast the event live around the world. Also on the card are a number of fighters that are in the prospect stage of their careers.
Yafai won flyweight gold at the Tokyo Olympics with a decision win over Carlo Paalam. In July 2022, he began his professional boxing career with a fifth round stoppage victory over Carlos Bautista. Due to his amateur pedigree, Yafai has only fought ten-rounders so far as Matchroom attempts to get him in a position for a world title shot sooner rather than later. He fights in his hometown for the first time in his pro career against Frank. Yafai will look to cement his position as a contender and inch closer towards a world title shot.
Frank made his professional boxing debut nearly six years prior to Yafai. At one point, he had a record of 13-0 before back-to-back losses to Rosendo Guarneros set him back. He came back from those losses with two wins in 2021, claiming the British flyweight title in the process. In 2022, he drew with Craig Derbyshire (who had a deceptive 8-28-3 record at the time) before losing his British flyweight title to Jay Harris via tenth round technical knockout in May of this year. Frank will look to return to contender status with a win over Yafai.
Yafai-Frank undercard bouts
There are a total of eight fights on the undercard of Yafai-Frank, including the likes of Cyrus Pattinson, Aaron Bowen, and Solomon Dacres. Here is more about the undercard from the Matchroom Boxing press release:
Alnwick’s rising welterweight star Cyrus Pattinson (6-0, 4 KOs) broke down and stopped former British champion Chris Jenkins last time out in March in his first headline fight at the Utilita Arena Newcastle to pick up the WBA International title.
The 29-year-old former Team GB standout puts his title on the line against Wolverhampton’s former Midlands Area Welterweight Champion Conah Walker (11-2-1, 3 KOs) as he continues to climb the 147lbs ladder towards further title shots later this year.
Warley heavyweight hope Solomon Dacres (6-0, 2 KOs) looks to build on his two-round demolition of Robert Ismay earlier this year while Oxford’s Jordan Flynn (9-0, 1 KOs) and Birmingham’s Kane Baker (19-10-1, 3 KOs) rematch in an eliminator for the English Super-Featherweight Title following their April clash.
There’s also action on the card for Bolton super-lightweight Khaleel Majid (10-0, 3 KOs), Coventry middleweight Aaron Bowen (2-0, 1 KO) and Leicester bantamweight prospect Muhammad Ali (2-0), plus professional debuts for Birmingham duo Sahil Khan and Ibraheem Sulaimaan.
