Filip Hrgovic vs Dave Allen: A modern day David vs Goliath in Doncaster
The heavyweight division continues to attract plenty of interest, with Oleksandr Usyk set to return to action, while Fabio Wardley vs Daniel Dubois is also on the horizon. Queensberry Promotions continues to be at the forefront of the most significant heavyweight boxing news. Queensberry has now announced Filip Hrgovic vs Dave Allen for May 16, at the Eco Power Stadium in Doncaster.
Filip Hrgovic vs Dave Allen and Queensberry heavyweights
Frank Warren has slowly put together, arguably, the best heavyweight stable in boxing. Tyson Fury, Fabio Wardley, Daniel Dubois, Agit Kabayel, and Hrgovic, among others.
Hrgovic (19-1, 14 KOs) famously fought for Matchroom in the Queensberry vs Matchroom 5v5, losing to Daniel Dubois. Since then, the Croatian has beaten Joe Joyce and David Adeleye, and will be looking to make it three in a row against the Brits.
Allen (25-8-2, 20 KOs) has retired at least as many times as Tyson Fury. His most eye-catching win came in the rematch against Johnny Fisher, stopping “The Romford Bull” in round five. Allen has shared the ring with Tony Yoka, Luis Ortiz, and Dillian Whyte, but appears rejuvenated in recent years, under the tutelage of Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis.
Allen vs Hrgovic set for Doncaster showdown
“The Doncaster De La Hoya” is known for his granite chin. Allen also has KO power and can never be overlooked, as proven by his wins against Nick Webb and Lucas Browne.
Allen, by his own admission, hasn’t always trained as he should have, but since moving to Jamie Moore and Nigel Travis, his career appears rejuvenated.
His performance in the first fight against Johnny Fisher shocked many, as he came back into the fight dramatically, losing by a controversial split decision. He comprehensively beat Fisher in the rematch before losing a competitive unanimous decision against Arslanbek Makhmudov. Last time out, Allen blew Karim Berredjem away in the first round.
“El Animal” was a decorated amateur who transitioned well into the professional ranks. He possesses plenty of power, and his ramrod jab is one of his best attributes. When he controls the distance and punches long, he’s difficult to beat, and for parts of his fights against Adeleye and Joyce, he looked a level above. However, he can be dragged into a fight, which Allen will be looking to drag him into and land the left to the body and a big overhand right.
Whether you like the fight or not, this could be explosive.
