Respected boxing trainer says what type of fighter would trouble Shakur Stevenson

On Saturday, January 31, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Shakur Stevenson defied a rise in weight to defeat Teofimo Lopez to win the lineal and WBO super lightweight titles in a dominant showing.

This impressive victory saw Shakur become a four-division world champion, with many wondering if there is an active fighter around Stevenson’s weight who could trouble him. Respected boxing trainer Stephen ‘Breadman’ Edwards was asked in his Daily Bread Mailbag if there is a fighter who could beat Shakur.

Shakur Stevenson dominates against Teofimo Lopez

Shakur Stevenson reigned supreme on January 31, outboxing Lopez throughout. Shakur quickly established his jab and used that to control the tempo and distance.

His speed and accuracy also helped him negate Lopez’s strengths, who had his moments, but they were fleeting. The judges’ scorecards were 119-109 x3, reflecting the dominance of Shakur.

Edwards reveals two styles that could trouble Shakur Stevenson

In his Daily Bread Mailbag, Edwards was asked if anyone can beat Shaur and how:

“Shakur does look untouchable. I can’t tell you WHO can beat Shakur. He may be good enough to beat everyone. But I can tell you what type of fighter can trouble him. A long sharp fighter with a Tommy Hearns-like dynamic offense. The fighter would have to have a significant reach advantage over Shakur to counteract his out-of-this-world reflexes. The fighter also has to have significant power so Shakur can feel the threat of being KO’d if he decides to press the fight.

“The other type of fighter is an Aaron Pryor-type. William Zepeda gave Shakur a tussle but Pryor is much better. Pryor is more athletic, better defensively, more twitchy with better pedigree than Zepeda. So, an athletic, relentless swarmer that can box. Maybe his volume can overcome Shakur’s precision. However, I don’t know if a Hearns- or Pryor-type exist for Shakur in his weight classes.”

Is there anyone who can beat Shakur Stevenson?
