Errol Spence – Terence Crawford Know Significance Of Their Fight

Tuesday afternoon in Los Angeles the media “kickoff’ began for the upcoming July 29th undisputed world welterweight title fight between unified champion Errol Spence and WBO titleholder Terence Crawford. And, not surprisingly, both fighters talked about the historical significance of their meeting.

From the Showtime Boxing release,

Undefeated boxing superstars and pound-for-pound greats Errol “The Truth” Spence Jr. and Terence “Bud” Crawford went face-to-face for the first time Tuesday before they meet for the undisputed welterweight championship on Saturday, July 29 in a SHOWTIME PPV (8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT) clash from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas headlining a Premier Boxing Champions event. Spence is the unified WBC, WBA and IBF Welterweight World Champion, while Crawford holds the WBO 147-pound world championship.

“This is the biggest fight in boxing right now,” said Spence. “This is a legendary fight. It’s an old-school fight. This is like the fights my dad used to tell me about. It’s the best fighting the best.”

“This is definitely a legacy fight and a fight that should be talked about everywhere,” said Crawford. “This is an old school type of fight. All the greats have fought each other and that’s what we’re doing for this era.”

Spence has patiently waited while Crawford couldn’t get free of his deal with Top Rank Boxing/promoter Bob Arum. This even included the former undisputed 140 lb. champ suing Arum for promising the Spence fight with a written guarantee that he would give Crawford a one million dollar bonus, if the fight wasn’t made by the end of 2020. It obviously, never materialized on that time line and Crawford says Arum reneged on the money/promise.

However, throughout 2022 Crawford was uninhibited by the Top Rank deal and still refused to agree to make a deal and fight Spence for the undisputed title last Fall or in the Winter of 2023, etc. Instead, Crawford was secretly making a PPV deal with little known BLK Prime to have a WBO title defense in his hometown of Omaha, NE, last December. Crawford ended up kayoing David Avaneysan in the sixth round.

While officially sharing the stage with Spence Tuesday, Crawford was saying the right things again,

“This is definitely a legacy fight and a fight that should be talked about everywhere,” said Crawford. “This is an old school type of fight. All the greats have fought each other and that’s what we’re doing for this era.”

Spence was last in the ring in April 2022, when he added the WBA 147 lb. world title to his WBC/IBF championships by stopping Yordenis Ugas in 10 rounds. He previously holds world title wins over the likes of Kell Brook and Shawn Porter and is regarded as one of the pound for pound best fighters in the world.
