Dillian Whyte Won’t Retire After 119 Second Itauma Defeat
Dillian Whyte Won’t Retire After 119 Second Itauma Defeat
Former boxing world title challenger Dillian Whyte was looking to properly relaunch his career in the ring in the much-anticipated clash in Riyadh with Moses Itauma, but following a first-round knockout loss to the rising heavyweight star, there are once again more questions than answers surrounding the 37-year-old’s future in the sport.
Dillian Whyte Retirement Talk After Moses Itauma Loss
Whyte Refuses to Retire
The Brixton man has previously challenged Tyson Fury for the WBC heavyweight title at Wembley Stadium and it was heavily rumoured earlier this year that talks had been held on potential rematches with both Anthony Joshua and Joseph Parker, and an impressive comeback victory against Itauma would have undoubtedly propelled him back into contention for another major fight with all of the riches that such a fight card would bring, but that is once again now very much in doubt and Whyte is now left rolling the proverbial dice at the roulette wheel to see where he goes next.

Following the defeat, Whyte took to his social media accounts to publicly affirm that he would not be walking away from the sport and retiring as some had begun speculating, stating that he fully intended to fight on as his spirit and ‘fire’ had not been diminished. Whether or not that will ultimately happen remains to be seen, given that, as of yet, there is no one in the frame to face him in a future contest.
With such a damaging defeat to Itauma, and factoring in his age now given the up and coming boxers making their way through the heavyweight path, whilst Whyte may be adamant that ‘this is not where (his) story ends’ he is obviously not the only one with a say in that when it comes to the more high profile and valuable match ups that he would want to take part in, especially at this stage of his career.
Whyte has undoubtedly had some very high-profile moments in the ring, though, and back in 2018, he did drop the current WBO Interim titlist (Joseph Parker) twice, and lifted himself off the canvas in the final round to take the win over Parker by a unanimous decision. And his rivalry with Joshua is equally famous. During their amateur careers, Whyte handed Joshua a first defeat, and they went on to clash in the memorable British title fight back in 2015. They were set for an equally memorable professional clash in 2023, but that was eventually called off following an alleged anti-doping violation by Whyte.
Dillian Whyte: Recent Times
When cleared to return to the ring, Whyte took victory over Ebenezer Tetteh in Gibraltar before then agreeing to fight Joe Joyce. The Joyce clash was called off after Whyte was forced to pull out, having sustained an injury. This ultimately led to the intriguing encounter with Itauma.
Whyte signed off his message to his fans by thanking them for standing by him through the ‘highs and the lows’ that he has endured in more recent years and he promised that ‘I’ll be back’ and whilst he’ll have his supporters to do just that, many others will focus on the brutal 119 second loss and how he was now a shadow of his former self.
