Devin Haney speaks honestly about Ryan Garcia and moving to 147
Devin Haney (32-0, 15 KOs) has received criticism throughout his career, whether it be people doubting his ability or feeling he received favourable scorecards from judges. Following his loss to Ryan Garcia, Haney was ridiculed, and even after the news of Garcia failing a pre-fight and post-fight test, Haney still seemed to face a remarkable amount of criticism. Ahead of his fight against Brian Norman Jr for the WBO welterweight title, Haney has spoken to Ariel Helwani about moving to 147 and where his legal pursuit against Ryan Garcia stands.
Devin Haney reflects on legal action against Ryan Garcia
Garcia’s future remains up in the air, following the end of his suspension for failing pre-fight and post-fight VADA drug tests, with Ostarine found in his urine. He returned to the ring on May 2 as the overwhelming favourite against Rolly Romero, only to lose by unanimous decision. This defeat for Garcia left the rumoured rematch with Haney in tatters.
Revealing where is legal action against Garcia stands:
“It was a f*cked up situation for me and my team because we got the short end of the stick. It was a guy that cheated, and I was getting all of the flak. I missed out on a lot of money.
“I wouldn’t have wanted to to do it like that, which is why I didn’t end up doing it like that. I didn’t go down that route. I said, let’s fight. Let’s forget that. Forget any lawsuit, forget anything. Let’s settle it in the ring,” Haney said to Helwani.
Devin Haney talks moving to 147 pounds
Discussing his move to 147, and how he feels carrying the extra weight in training, “The Dream” said:
“I feel so much better… My training camps aren’t based around weight like they were for a long time. I would go on a training camp to lose weight.
“Now, it’s really around game planning and really just getting better… I only stayed at those small weight classes because it was so much at stake.”
Looking ahead to his fight on November 22 against Brian Norman Jr, Haney said:
“They say I can’t block a left hook, right? Well, we saw Brian Norman in his last fight — he knocked the guy out cold with a left hook. They say I can’t take a punch. From what they say, he’s kryptonite to my style.
“That’s why this fight is so important for me, to turn the non-believers into believers and prove the doubters and naysayers wrong.”
