Deontay Wilder’s Manager Shelly Finkel Responds to Francis Ngannou Callout

Former UFC heavyweight champion and the inaugural PFL super fights heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou (0-2, 0 KOs) recently appeared on the Ariel Helwani Show and revealed his desired next move was a boxing match with Deontay Wilder (44-4-1, 43 KOs). Now, Wilder’s manager, Shelly Finkel, has spoken to Sky Sports about that callout.

When speaking to Ariel Helwani, Ngannou was asked if he was actively pursuing the Wilder bout: “Yes, I do. We haven’t engaged personally, but it’s gonna be soon,” Ngannou.

Helwani then asked the PFL star if talks would happen soon, and he said: “Yeah. We’re setting some things up, but I keep training.”

“I would say so,” said Ngannou regarding Wilder being his number one choice for his next fight in any sport.

Following this callout, Wilder’s manager, Shelly Finkel, said to Sky Sports: “Deontay would be open to that fight next year.”

Deontay Wilder vs Francis Ngannou

Should Wilder and Ngannou meet, there will be plenty of questions in the build-up. Wilder was one of the most fearsome punchers in the history of the heavyweight division. His right hand was deadly as he walked through all opponents, before losing 0-2-1 in his taxing trilogy against Tyson Fury. “The Bronze Bomber” had his moments during the trilogy, knocking Fury down on more than one occasion. But ultimately, the ability of Fury was too much for Wilder.

Inactivity and two recent defeats against Joseph Parker and Zhilei Zhang left many doubting what Wilder had left, but he did win his last fight against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon. He boxed well in parts, using his jab effectively, but his timing with the right hand appeared off, which could have been due to inactivity.

Ngannou announced himself to the boxing world, pushing Fury to the limit, only losing on a split decision. In his second boxing fight, he was knocked out in two rounds by Anthony Joshua. Do we need a Wilder vs Ngannou fight? If it’s made, who wins it?
