Bombs Away: Relive David Haye’s Destructive Night Against Enzo Maccarinelli
On March 8, 2008, at The O2 Arena, Greenwich, London, David Haye met Enzo Maccarinelli for the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring cruiserweight titles. It was a build-up with plenty of tension and fight night was as explosive as we all hoped.
The Haymaker” was the bookies’ favourite, but Maccarinelli entered the fight full of confidence. Ultimately, Haye’s bombs made the difference as he blasted away his Welsh opponent in two rounds. Relive “Bombs Away” with Big Fight Weekend.
Reliving David Haye’s Explosive Win Over Enzo Maccarinelli
David Haye vs Enzo Maccarinelli Fight Recap
The fight began cautiously but Maccarinelli landed the first significant punch, with a smart left hook, which briefly hurt “The Hayemaker.” Haye settled better as the opening round progressed and looked to close the distance quicker, landing an overhand right, which the Welshman absorbed.
A left hand from Maccarinelli in the second round opened up a cut above the eye of Haye, which saw the Bermondsey-born fighter respond with a pint point accurate right hand, which was followed quickly with a sharp left to the ribs, clearly hurting the Welsh fighter.
Haye smelt blood at this point, backing Macarinelli up in the corner under a flurry of shots, which ended with a big right bomb from “The Hayemaker” which floored the Welshman, who made it to his feet on clearly unsteady legs, which forced the referee John Keane to wave the fight off. A blistering second-round TKO victory for Haye.
The Aftermath for David Haye
Speaking after the explosive win against Macarinelli, Haye confirmed he was moving to heavyweight. Following the bout at The 02, Haye faced Monte Barrett, winning by fifth-round TKO.
David then faced a real-life goliath when he faced Nikolai Valuev for the WBA heavyweight title. Vakluev stood at 7 feet but was no match for the slick and nimble movement of “The Hayemaker,” who rocked the Russian giant with a heavy left-right combination, nearly knocking the Russian over in the final round.
The rest of Haye’s career saw him record memorable wins against John Ruiz, Audley Harrison and Derek Chisora. Despite losing to Carl Thompson, Wladimir Klitschko and Tony Bellew x2 later in his career – the Londoner will be remembered fondly by many British fight fans.
