David Benavidez Hints at Blockbuster Fight in New Division

Dan Rafael recently revealed on a Big Fight Weekend podcast that David Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) and David Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) will meet for the WBC interim light heavyweight title on Feb 1 at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. During a recent chat with DAZN News, “The Monster Bandera Roja” made it clear he’s focused on Feb. 1 but has revealed he would be willing to move to cruiserweight and face current unified champion Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in a huge Mexico vs. Mexico clash.

Benavidez Eyes Major Fight at Cruiserweight

David Benavidez’s trainer and father Jose recently to Fight Hub TV about his son’s upcoming fight against Morrell and how confident they are Team Benavidez will be victorious: “There’s levels to boxing. I think Davids on a different level.” Talking about the February 1 showdown, Jose said:David’s super focused. Mentally, spiritually and everything.”

Speaking to DAZN News, Benavidez teased a fascinating clash with unified cruiserweight world champion “Zurdo” Ramirez: “That is definitely a fight that we’re eyeing and if we could get that fight tomorrow, we’d go and fight that fight tomorrow, too,” said Benavidez.

Benavidez Discusses ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez

Discussing Ramirez, he said: “I know ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez real well and I’m actually really proud of him, too, because he’s the unified champion at 200 pounds. He won two titles, he’s accomplished a lot. I’ve known him for a long, long time, so it makes me really proud to be his friend and work with him.”

A fight between Benavidez and Ramirez would seemingly happen at cruiserweight, with Benavidez teasing the bout: “So I feel like, at the end of the day, this could possibly be one of the biggest fights in cruiserweight history.” He added: “You know, two Mexicans going at it. It’d definitely be a great fight.”

“That fight, I feel is definitely a great fight for me and my team,” he continued.

The Phoenix native added: “I’m moving little by little, but like I said, if the opportunity is presented to me then I’m not going to turn it down.”

The heavy-handed 27-year-old also revealed his confidence in beating Morrell: “I know I’m going to do that.” Following a win against the Cuban, Benavidez revealed: and then I’m going after all four belts.”
