‘But the Fact is’: Eddie Hearn Gives Honest Take on Dubois Quit Claims

On July 19, at Wembley Stadium, Oleksandr Usyk once again dominated and stopped Daniel Dubois to become the 2x undisputed heavyweight champion. Since this fight, Dubois has received criticism from many, including Derek Chisora, for allegedly quitting. Eddie Hearn has now spoken to The Stomping Ground and given his honest take on these quitting allegations.

Eddie Hearn Reflects on Daniel Dubois vs Oleksandr Usyk

Hearn Addresses Quitting Accusations

It was a highly impressive performance from Usyk, who started on the front foot and timed his shots beautifully. Dubois tried to respond, but Usyk’s movement was sublime at times, allowing allowing him to pick off the Brit before stopping him in the fifth round. Almost immediately after the fight, accusations emerged from across the sport suggesting Dubois had quit.

Reflecting on these allegation, Hearn said: “Like I said, not everybody gets up in that situation. It was a big shot. Seeing the first fight, it was a jab, right? he got hit by a stiff jab, he went down, he let the referee count to ten in front of him. And again, I think quitting is a very harsh word.

Looking at the first fight, it’s difficult to disagree with Hearn. Clarifying his thoughts on the rematch stoppage, he said: “He quit in the first fight. Give him the benefit of the doubt in the second fight. He chose not to get up, and people will say, well, that’s quitting. It’s not really. It wasn’t a stiff jab; it was a huge left hand. But the fact is, he could have got up.”

The Future for Daniel Dubois

It remains to be seen what the future hold for Daniel Dubois, but after the fight he appeared determined to return: “It didn’t go my way,” Dubois told The Ring afterwards.

“Congratulations to Oleksandr Usyk, a great champion.”

If Dubois does return, there is some clear improvements that need to be made inside the ring and outside with all the criticisms regarding the gathering before the fight.
