Claressa Shields gives honest opinion on Mikaela Mayer fight
Claressa Shields, the self-proclaimed GWOAT, is also the GWOAT to many. Her impact on women’s boxing is undeniable. She has risen from the ranks to become the undisputed heavyweight champion. A move back down in weights looks likely in order to find a challenge for the American. When asked about her opinion on certain women boxers, Shields has never been shy in revealing her opinion. In an interview with Boxing Social, Shields was asked about Mikaela Mayer and didn’t hold back in her comparison between the two.
Claressa Shields reveals honest opinion on Mikaela Mayer
Shields (17-0, 3 KOs) is back in action on Feb 22, as she defends her undisputed heavyweight crown against Franchon Crews Dezurn. The Americans’ toughest fight was arguably against the British fighter Savannah Marshall.
Mayer (22-2, 5 KOs) has only suffered two close losses against Natasha Jonas and Alycia Baumgardner. The American fighter produced two dominant performances, beating Sandy Ryan, before moving up to super welterweight and beating Mary Spencer by unanimous decision to win the WBC and WBO titles. The scorecards for the Spencer fight were 100-90 and 98-92 x2.
When asked about Mikaela Mayer by Boxing Social, Shields said:
“She feeling herself. She went to 154. She beat up Mary Spencer. I beat up Mary Spencer when I was 17. It didn’t take me all these years to see if I can beat up Mary Spencer. But hey, she fought against Mary Spencer.
“She went up in weight, won a great fight against Mary Spencer, but I am who I am. And I’m happy that she has that confidence, but me and Mikaela have never sparred before. There’s a reason for that…I’m too good. She sparred everybody else. She never sparred me. And that’s because Coach AL kept her away from me, and all the coaches at the Olympics kept her away from me. But hey, she want to fight, let’s go. I already told her. I said 165 is a great weight for me.
“I’ve been 165. I fought that for some years. I went down. She want to fight, that’s the weight.”
